Understanding Politics

I want to understand the basics of British and US politics, I've read books but they all 'assume' that readers have understanding of political basics and it doesn't help. Political news assume likewise. I follow Question Time and a lot of political debates but I can't absorb the information because it is obfuscated with political terms! It seems to be a maze with no entrance. I profoundly admire those who grasp politics. Please help me. Where did you begin? Do you have any recommendations of books, films, podcasts, etc.?
Labour - Bunch of champagne socialists that claim to represent 'the poor' but do nothing but take responsibility away from those same people, and in general take all responsibility away from society. Actually somehow managed to change Prime minister of the country without an election.

Conservatives - Interested in their banker chums and high society lifestyle. All for lower taxes which I therefore support. Generally done a good job at taking over after the Labour disaster. Probably the best of a bad bunch despite the Norths cries of 'Thatcher shut the mines dontcha know.'

Lib Dems - Complete farce.

UKIP - Somehow managed to convince people that leaving the EU completely is a good idea. Again, complete farce.

Every other party - Complete farce.

I really wouldn't bother with politics if I were you. All of them are just as bad as each other. Liberals are slowly but surely bleeding this country dry of responsibility and money. Does it necessarily effect you? No.

This is what I admire though! When someone is so aware and attentive of their country's parties and politics that they can astutely judge rather than obliviously follow whatever is fed to them.
