The mandelbrot set

Does anyone know of any really good idiot level (for myself) basic books (or detailed basic papers online) which might explain the mathematics behind the Mandelbrot set?

I had the Devaney book on exactly that - but the mathematics it used is FAR too advanced for my knowledge - I`d love to get hold of a book that explains the maths behind it in basic terms without being patronising.

Anyone know of any such materials?
