Cardiff accommodation issue? - Which has the best sized room and social atmosphere?

Hey guys,
So I got an unconditional offer for Cardiff and I'm so excited to be study there.
Now, I'm looking at halls but it's a bit confusing because the pics online look really small. Ive heard good things about Talybont Court for its size, but that its quiet.

I really want a nice, big sized room (and ensuite) but also a nice social atmosphere?
Do they still put you on a floor with undergrads like you so its still got that same social atmosphere or how does it work and does anyone have any tips or advice?

Thanks

this whole "better social scene" thing regarding talybont south is nonsense. it's just the luck of the draw who you happen to get put with in accom. there are a lot of students in taly south, yes, but you aren't going to know ALL of them, so that argument is kinda irrelevant.

taly court is very nice, but very expensive.
taly south is pretty decent
taly north is a bit ugly
^^ all taly residences are a fair trek from the city centre

senghennydd is ridiculously close to everything, but a bit ugly
gordon is again quite close to everything, but a bit small

uni hall is in the middle of nowhere

feel free to ask me any Qs

As a perspective student ( just firmed Cardiff =D ) I'm now looking at accommodation, with my current preference being the Talybont residences.

I think I'm after somewhere that makes me feel like part of the university and Cardiff social scene, but I don't necessarily want to be up partying up all night. I'm 6ft 5, so Talybont North is off the list, but apart from that, do you have any suggestions/recommendations of where to stay?

I would recommend Talybont South. A few people I know moved from Taly Court to Taly South mid way through the year because they felt they couldn't socialise that much in Court.
The flats in South are arranged in such a way that makes it easier to socialise. It's a bit more difficult in Court.

I lived in South last year so obviously I'm biased. The rooms in South are ensuite and they are bigger than North. Granted they aren't as big as Court, but tbh I don't think you need a lot of room.

Feel free to ask anymore questions, I will try my best to help.

in general i'd say:

senghennydd court if you don't want to walk 20 minutes to get to, well, pretty much anywhere
talybont south if you don't mind the above

Hi - On all the pictures on the website, at the end of the beds in Talybont south is like a cabinet type thing. Is this permanently attached to the wall or can you move it? ( i'm basing this on the assumption that the room shown is typical of the actual rooms). I'm just a bit worried that with my height I won't be able to fit comfortably on the bed without having to curl my feet up etc
From my experience Taly Court is very quiet, Taly South is a lot more sociable. Taly in general is good because it is relatively near to the enormous tesco (though there are a lot of smaller supermarkets around near the other accomodations as well), however is a 15/20 minute walk from the uni (depends on your walking speed). Taly Court has good sized rooms and a big kitchen and living room type area in each flat, which is nice for socialising with flatmates but doesn't seem to have a lot of socialising between flats.
Other accomodations are closer to the uni and seem to be quite sociable from what I've heard. I think the bigger rooms are in the university owned student houses and Aberconway, though you would have to check.
Uni hall is a bus ride away but there is a free bus.
With flatmates it really is the luck of the draw - I've been really lucky and ended up with lovely people, but have friends who weren't so lucky - one even had to move flat!
No matter where you end up you will be part of the social scene as the residences are mostly very near Cardiff university (except uni hall but there are a lot of people there and I think it's quite sociable), and there are plenty of societies, clubs and such like as well as Freshers Week so it's easy to be a part of it.

There was no cabinet at the end of my bed in South, so I am assuming it's movable. I had a flatmate who was about 6ft, and he didn't seem to have any problems. Most of the complaints I've heard about beds and height come from North.

You can leave your stuff during Christmas and Easter. Some people also choose to stay during the holidays.

Should you book accommodation early? Or do rooms fill up quickly?

Question about the accommodation application process:
Can I put the same accommodation choice more that once? (With details changed, for example at Talynorth - can i apply for a medium room in one slot, then a small room in a different slot???)
Also how many slots need to be filled?

Yeah you can do that and I don't think there's a limit to how many you can fill out (for me I was struggling to fill out the least amount haha)

Hey everyone, I'm also looking for accommodation in Cardiff. University Hall and Liberty House look good to me. What I want though is a rather decent bathroom (en-suite). I found a video of someone showing around Talybont North and toilet, shower and sink were so close together. But there are no photos of the bathrooms. Do you know anything that could help me?

Yeah, they can all have separate slots. You get a list of about 26 (or however many accommodation options there are) which you fill out so basically it's where you list all accommodation in your list of preference. The medium/small etc. rooms will each take up their own slot and you can choose between them on the drop down menu.
