Racemic mixtures. Aqa 2007

Q: state the meaning of the term racemic mixtures and explain why such a mixture is formed.

A:
1. Optically inactive
2. Equal mixture of both enantiomers
3. Planar carbonyl group (stated or drawn)
4. Attack from above or below

What do points 3 and 4 actually mean? Someone care to explain pls? :colondollar:

Planar means flat. Does that help?

The C double O bond (I.e. the carbonyl group) can be attacked from above or below it by a nucelophile (or whatever it is) because the C=O bond is flat (I.e. planar).
