accommodation at Northumbria Uni

I'm trying to choose accommodation for 14/15, and it's so hard!! At first i really of Lovaine Halls because i like the idea of being in a kind of dorm like accommodation as there will be more people as i don't like the risk of being in a flat with 4 people and not getting on with the other 3 people, but i wonder how the 'flats' are floored out? Are the flats separated with doors so they are kind of a long corridor with a load of bedrooms either side and a door inbetween each flat, or are they like above each other so you're completely separate from other flats? I don't particularly want to stay in the Lovaine Halls as they look a bit grubby. Advice would be deeply appreciated!!

What course are you doing?
Yeah, the flats are separated like in one building there would be 6 floors or so with 4 flats on each
then within each flat there would be four or more rooms off a corridor (normally 4 or 6) which have your bed, desk space, wardrobe and en-suite in and then at the end there is a kitchen, dining area and sometimes a sitting area depending on which ones you choose.

You can choose studios where you have your own kitchen in your room but these are a lot more expensive and I think its better to share as then you have more of a chance of making friends?

I really like Manor Bank, New Bridge Street and Victoria Halls, these are off campus but are at max at 5 minute walk from the uni, I also quite fancy the new one in Gateshead but that's a 20 minute walk so I'm not sure.

Also it depends whether you want catered or self-catered, as I think the only catered one in Claude Gibb, but I'm not so sure.

Hope this helps, I'm doing Biomedical Sciences

I would not recommend Lovaine Halls at all! My boyfriend stayed there last year and hated it.
I stayed in New Bridge Street which was really nice. They are split into flats of mostly 4 room each with ensuite and a really nice shared kitchen/ living area. Theres four flats on each floor and 5 floors in each block so its quite easy to meet and socialise with people.

Has anybody made Manor Bank their first choice??

And has anyone heard anything back yet?!?!?!

I wouldn't advise lovaine either, it didn't have a great reputation.

I was in stephenson, it was a good enough price, flats (between 3-8people), some of the rooms are huge. It's not much of an issue if you don't get on with the flatmates because you only really have to communicate about the cleaning for the weekly flat checks but other than that it's pretty easy to do your own thing assuming none of you are dicks to each other. I personally don't think the sparkly, all-singing, all-dancing en suit accommodation buildings are worth their prices but I'm not ashamed of slumming it out a bit

Are you currently at Northumbria or going in Sept? I've applied to do tourism management. I really like the look of Glenamara because they have the most people in the flats other than Claude Gibb and Lovaine Halls. I want self catered and i'm not at all bothered about an en-suite, I don't really see the point of it. So do you think it would be easy to socialise with people in other flats/floors? As i've heard stories from people who say they don't even know other lives in the flats on their floor. I'm a very outgoing person anyway so hopefully this won't be a problem! Also, do you know whether accommodation is first come first serve? Cheers!!

Manor Bank is my second choice and Trinity Square is my first. Really thinking about swapping them though because Trinity Square is a bit further away and I'm guessing most people will want to be closer to campus

I'm going in September,
Most people I know who go to Northumbria have said that Glenamara is more of a party place. Yeah I suppose you'd get to know your flat mates really well and if there was more than 4 that would be better in a way. But there would probably be people on your course in the same block of flats as you and you'd see the same people regulary.

I've already applied and I don't think we hear back until June so I think they just try to accomadate what most people would prefer in the best way they can.

My top 3 are Knoll court, Liberty quay and Victoria hall. Is anybody else picking any of those? Is anybody else going to be studying on campus east?

I live in liberty quay ATM  it is a good accommodation but it's just annoying cos there's only two flats on a floor, which means that there isn't many to socialise with on your floor

hey if you guys want to stay in manor bank, I already have a booking starting september and since i won't be living there next year, if you want you could take the room allotted to me.

Please let me know if your interested.
Thanks Alot

Unless anyone is desperate for catered I'd not recommend Claude Gibb. My friend lives there this year and it isn't very nice. There's no common rooms in the flats (or corridors as they should be called) so the only place to hang out is the bedrooms.
the only pros are that the rooms are decent size and it's on campus.

And it smells

On the other hand, Camden Court is nice enough.

I'm going to Northumbria this year after a gap year to study Biomed.
I've put Camden as my first choice and glenamara as my second as they're next door to each other, and are pretty much on
campus.

The student loan I'll be getting isn't great so I can only just afford to live in Camden Court if I use my savings from the year.

I am hoping for manor bank - put it as my first choice... How come you have found out your allocation already ? Is it a studio ?? Or shared flats
Has anyone else had trouble applying for accommodation? I want to apply for Victoria Halls and Camden Court mainly, any opinions on those? Social life etc...

camdem court is nice, and literally a two minute walk from campus. I've applied there and I know a few people who live there now and enjoy it. They know most people on their floor but not many from other floors.

I suppose it depends on how willing you are to mingle as to how good the social life is.

No idea on manor bank though

I think both Victoria Halls and Camden Court are basically right on campus, would be able to roll out of bed into lectures if I go there!
Where are people coming from btw? I'm coming all the way from South London, it's a long way!
