I am not sure yet... I have already been to many of the Heythrop conferences and Philosophy talks already since I live quite near London. As for Heythrop, it is a really nice and awesome place! Apparently, many of the lectures have turned down job offers from Oxford!

Really? it must be good for them to turn Oxford down. I have been to one open day and I agree, it is such a nice place. If you don't mind me asking, where else have you applied for?

I have applied to Sheffield, York, Nottingham, and St Andrews. I didn't really like Sheffield that much despite it being highly rated. One good thing about Heythrop, if you don't already know, is that because it is part of the UoL university, you can choose to do modules related to your course at any university within the UoL. This includes unis such as Kings, UCL, and LSE. Another important thing to keep in mind is to completely disregard the league tables. Heythrop was ranked down in the league tables because one of the things they judge unis on is the breath of courses they offer... Heythrop only offers a very small range of courses, being a specialist in Philosophy and Theology. This caused them to loose ranks in the league tables. :frown:

From what I've heard they are highly regarded unis. I didn't know that about Heythrop it's interesting to know. I applied to Southampton, Leeds, Cardiff and Oxford Brookes. But I definitely think Heythrop was the best for me. I especially like the one-to-one tutor times Heythrop offer and that it's a small uni. Do you think you'll put it as one of your final two choices?

Yes, currently at the moment I am planning on putting Heythrop as my firm . The fact that I can do modules at any university in the UoL group won it over for me.
I applied for heythrop too! for philosophy politics and ethics  its my second choice atm. Oxford Brookes just won me over:P xx

Most likely.
Does anybody know if you can get en-suite facilities or be self-catered in Alban halls? I am trying to decide between Heythrop and Kings and i think this trivial matter may push one over the edge.

No, Alban Halls has no en suite accommodation. However, I believe that you can be self-catered. The rooms at Alban Halls are very big though, since they use to belong to a nunnery! Also you will only be sharing loos an showers with the 8 people on your floor, who will most likely be your mates!

No you cannot be self-catered in Alban Halls. Your rent includes an allowance for the canteen; this is not an opt-in or opt-out system. There is a kitchen in every flat with the usual amenities but you will have to buy your own food as well paying for your allowance. If you can afford to do this then great, but considering the rent is already £6,500 for the year buying food on top of that seems like a waste of money. And yes you can get en-suite rooms (only a toilet, not a shower) in St Katherine's wing. These rooms are a couple of hundred pounds more expensive for the year, but you will still have to share the shower. In my experience, and I've lived in Alban Halls for a couple of years, sharing the shower and toilet facilities really isn't an issue.

I don't think this should be a deciding factor between King's and Heythrop, however. You can live where you like, London is a very big place.

See my reply to the person above. Alban Halls does have rooms with private toilets in the St. Katherine's wing. Each flat has 11 rooms, so you will be sharing with 10 others (apart from St. Katherine's which has 5 rooms to a flat), not 8. And you cannot be self-catered in Alban Halls, your rent includes an allowance for the canteen.
just changed Heythrop from my insurance to my firm! ;P i attended another open day the other week and just felt like id made a big mistake! Not staying in the halls though, any fellow commuters?
Applied for the philosophy MA. Does anyone know if there is a bar on campus? Also are the 1 to 1s with the lecturers part of the tutorials or do you have to book appointments for the 1 to 1s?

Thanks guys and good luck.

There is a student bar on the lower ground floor in the common room. You must book one-to-one appointments however you are also required to attend small group seminars with around 6-8 other students which are the equivalent of tutorials.

Hope this helped.
