Hello and welcome to Heriot-Watt's new Ask a Current Student thread! This is a place where prospective students and applicants can ask questions to current students at the university. Below, there will be a list of students who have offered to help answer questions on anything to do with the university. I'd also ask if people can ask specific questions about things rather than a generic question like "Is the teaching good?" because the answer you will get will probably be not that helpful as I'd be rather unsure exactly what you are attempting to discover. :tongue:

Additional information: I should be able to answer most questions relating to physics and mathematics degrees but I might be able to help with other EPS and MACS courses. I actually started here at Heriot-Watt in 2nd year after doing my 1st year at the University of the West of Scotland studying physics after a disappointing 6th year at high school. I do have friends who started in 1st year so I think I can still answer most of the questions about that.

Halls lived in during 1st year: I moved to Edinburgh the year before I started uni, so I lived off-campus.
Educational Background: One Higher, a mix of vocational qualifications, and an HND. (SQA)
Additional Information: I did atrociously in High School do went to college for two years before uni. Last year I was the Class Rep for Information Systems. This year, I am on the board of the Computing Society and I was elected as HW's Delegate to NUS Scotland.
I will be able to answer most questions about CompSci courses, articulation from college, and things to do with societies, representation or the Student Union.

Most if not all of the societies are pretty active with most meeting at least once a week. I think the academic societies tend to meet less often (The Physics society meets once every 2 weeks for example but they do other events throughout the year so its a bit more often than that.)
I haven't seen anything about Christina Millar apart from what's on the website. I, myself have only been to it once mainly to rescue a few drunk people :tongue:

hi there

it is a great uni good fun and for the most part good lecturers. its a campus uni so you often bump into people you know .

I'd say it's a fun university but then I'm biased :P The question of whether we have good lectures or not is pointless tbh. This is because at most universities, you will get good lectures and bad lectures within the same department. If it sets your mind at ease thought, I'd say I've never had a lecturer so far who didn't really know what they were talking, just a few who sometimes had trouble getting that across.

I have applied for Spanish and Applied Language Studies but the only uni I am still waiting to hear from is Heriot Watt! I was just wondering whether you find the language department helpful and engaging? Is there a good support system or is there a lot more independence? Alsooo, I actually fell in love with stirling campus but didn't get the same feeling about heriot watt, though I was only there a short time. Do you find it a nice place to study? Basically I am just wondering what's your overall opinion of your studies so far!

Well the French department isn't exactly the most organised of departments, I can tell you that!! But yeah you get assigned a mentor who you can go to with any problems, be it personal or academic.

I loooooove the HW campus, I've found it really weird on my year abroad to be at unis with buildings spread over the city :tongue:

I think you definitely get a high quality of language learning at Heriot-Watt :smile:

I'm assuming by bioscience, you mean biology. If so, I can't comment directly but I know a few doing biology degrees and most of them seem fairly happy with it apart from those doing brewing as they only get to do specialist modules in that kind of stuff in 3rd and 4th year. I'm not exactly sure what you are after here to be honest?
