Im going to be studying computing this year, first year
I have been wondering if there are exams, how many of them there are and what they're like, if anyone knows. :s
I'm planning on studying Forensic Computing this year, but I've heard that the first year is a framework year so everybody doing Computing related subjects will all do the framework year.

Hey there, i'm presently within the framework and also one of the student reps for it. Yes there sadly is exams which is kinda of a bummer as a lot of people have come from years of not having exams for example BTECS, having full time jobs and other things. There is at least one per subject you do on the year as this year we have had six exams. There was a mixed response to the exams but all in all it's your own personal opinion on them.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Thank you for replying, having exams are a bit of a bummer :s I've finished my BTEC course a few weeks ago and found it was so much easier than I expected, but the problem is I don't do as well in exams sometimes :c.

I have a few questions if you wouldn't mind answering them:
Would you say the exams are hard?
Are they formal exams?
Are they done on a PC?
What kind of questions are there? Like do you have to write a lot?
How long are they?

Sorry about the questions, I just can't find anything about them online at all :s
Thank you

(I will be referencing other people's opinion from our course Facebook page)

The exams range from difficulty. A lot of people found the more practical exams such as Programming and User Web Development to be harder then the more theory based ones such as Business Professional Issues. However this said it will vary due to your own strengths and weaknesses.

The exams are formal you sit in a room with a desk and chair with several other hundred students around you (this is because you sometimes share rooms with other courses) and you have to keep quiet until you finish your exam paper then you are aloud to leave.

Only people with learning disabilities get to use computer for example I am dyslexic so I get to use one myself.

The exams can tend to be quite large however they generally last between 1 and 2 hours and are marked out of 100. The questions can range from things such as 'What is Random Access Memory' to much larger essay like questions.

It is hard to find all this out online and is much easier to talk to a member of the course so feel free to ask me more questions if need be

1) Exams are exams; they aren't designed to be easy. There will naturally be subjects that you excel in and subjects you don't, so it makes little sense to describe the exams in this way. The main point of first year is to serve as a time to bring all the students up to the same level of knowledge, covering a wide range of topics to at least some level, so that people can specialise for the second year. Therefore, I would say the first year exams aren't terrifically difficult, but a lot of students underestimate them because they believe the first year doesn't matter.

2) Yep; you have to go an exam hall and complete the exam in silence. Any cheating or whatever will render you liable for disqualification, so they're about as formal as exams go.

3) Computers are only given to those with special circumstances, such as dyslexia, etc. If you think you'd benefit from one the university can test you and give you a computer if necessary, in which case you get to go into a separate room and are given slightly more time.

4) Hard to say; depends on the exam. Generally the exams are split into 5/6 questions and you pick 3, and those three might be broken down into 3 sub questions. Some exams may have more open-ended questions, but there isn't much you can do about that...

5) Exams are typically 2.5 hours if I remember correctly

It sounds as though you may be concerned about the exams, but there's not really any need to be; assuming you go to lectures & labs you should be fine - the exams aren't designed to çatch you out. Lecturers are more than happy to help and put on revision sessions towards the exams, and you'll be given past papers too so you can gauge what the exams will be like. If you have any other questions feel free to shoot me a message, I just finished second year so know quite a bit about the course.

Timetable varies depending on what class you are in but you usual get a full day off and a few half days(or empty gaps in the day)
