Re: The chemistry socIf it's trans they can't both be axial or both equatorial- so you're going to have to pick which is more stable; the hydroxy equatorial or the methyl. See A-values(Original post by Turdburger)

Found that, which i presume is basically the answer. Sorry to be thick, but is diequatorial the cis isomer?
My thinking was orginally diaxial wont exist as it will ring flip to form the diequatorial -- diequatorial being far away from each other so trans. Wheras 1 equatorial 1 axial is closer so cis. Confused.

Re: The chemistry soc
Cheers guys thanks a lot. Would rep if i havent already repped you both too recently. I get myself in such a muddle with ring chemistry its going to be best to learn to learn the stuff off by heart rather than by principal.
Past paper 71/100 with 4/20 in rings suggests I need to work on it a bit

Re: The chemistry socWelcome(Original post by Brianstorm91)
I guess I ought to show my face here, all things going to plan I'll hopefully be starting at Bristol this autumn. Now just to get these exams over and done with...
Exams are annoying arn't they? Best of luck with them though
Bristols a lovely place, I know a couple of people went there to do their PhDs too. -
Re: The chemistry socThanks, I don't mind the exam as such, just the extended answer bits (10-odd marks!) they always seem to be on the more annoying parts to write about like colour and glc.(Original post by EierVonSatan)

I love the synthesis questions, though

Re: The chemistry socExcellent, another chemistry(Original post by Zedd)
I've just made a late application for chemistry...considering we barely cover the higher chemistry coursework (we only do two units out of the three and don't take end of year exams) I am slightly nervous but enthusiastic
victimapplicant
Don't worry about the coursework aspect it's pretty irrelevant to what you'll be doing at university

Re: The chemistry socReflux is where you heat a mixture so that it boils, but instead of letting the solvent (or other volatiles) boil off you put a condenser on top to recycle the mixture so that you don't lose anything.(Original post by Kinkerz)
Question for homework says identify the main organic compound formed when the mixture is refluxed.
What exactly does reflux mean? I've never known, and you see it quite alot...
We say something is refluxing when its boiling and dropping back down once condensed

Re: The chemistry socAh. Makes sense...(Original post by EierVonSatan)

Re: The chemistry soc
hi chemistry buds. I cant get to grips with the buchner funnel, I've been researching it but still to no luck. Like we used it in class for the manufacture of aspirin, but i didnt have a clue what was going on. What is the point of the water from the tap, and what is the aim of using it? Please help!
that's one way I guess
