Self-catered or catered halls? Which is best in terms of social interaction?

I love the campus and I want to live on campus but in a self-catered hall. I hadn't realised that all of the halls on campus are catered. I had a look at Cripps and I didn't like the hall at all. It looks nice from the outside but its very dark inside and everything is brown and it feels so isolated. Although I heard catered halls are good as you meet loads of new people when you go down to eat together.
I liked the idea of self-cater as you have more freedom (or seem to) and you have 5-8 flatmates to interact with. I just don't want to be isolated, what would you say is the best type of hall? Catered or self-catered?
In catered do people knock on other peoples doors and chat? Do the flatmates get together? It just seems so cold and isolated being a block of rooms rather than having a place where you can sit e.g a kitchen and get to know people. Having said that, not having to worry about cooking or shopping is a great thing.
Broadgate Park is a decent and underrated place, i.m.o. SO LONG as you get one of the newer blocks. I was in Junipers (they're all named after trees / plants.)

As for social interaction, Broadgate Park is a good place to go to and from halls and there are many of them. Also, the layouts inside are good for meeting up w/ a lot of people in the kitchens. There are also many shops in Beeston, not far away. (But the place isn't nice at all and empty of good bars, etc.)

I can answer any questions you may have specifically.

As for banging on doors and drunkards, that depends only on the types of people you are matched with; t.b.h.

Edit: I was referring to the off-site accommodation, about 5 mins from campus and self-catered. But there is also catered at this place and they're semi-interdependent from UoN, so much cheaper.

I WOULD recommend them.

Ah ok! Thank you for replying so soon. I had a look at Broadgate yesterday and I really liked it but I'm concerned I may not get on with flatmates ? Or even see them that much. Basically I want to have friends around me and not be isolated, thats my main concern about living so far away from home. I am very bad a cooking so maybe catered is best after all? When I asked if people knock on your door I meant as a friendly hello and get to know you, but i suppose you would get drunkards as well! Do you mix with people from the other floors in your flat and meet up together? Im not looking for raving flat parties every night I just want to make sure before making a choice on accommodation that I will have the opportunity to socialise and won't be isolated :-) I guess with the catered halls on campus its really to do with getting lucky and where the uni decides to put you. Broadgate is lovely though. Long walk to the department that il be studying in!

I no longer study at UoN, and yes I studied Geography and that was about 30mins away by foot; I have short legs!!! Hahaha.

I would actually recommend non-catered for those who can't cook MORE than those who can. Because you'd be surprised by how fast you can learn and also learn budgeting / time management skills at the same time.

As for friends, etc. I saw my flatmates every day (despite us all being on different courses) and the atmosphere varies so much, that I cannot give you an overall view; sorry. But, the more parties you want, there more they shall be; right? You make your own environment. Those friends you do make, in the block you're in, you'll see every day in the kitchen; which has a large enough table for everyone; although not everyone chooses to eat together anyway. And so you'll at least have options. Catered food often leaves a lot to be desired and having options (I found, being from catered and non-catered in the past), that non-catered is overall better in every way - unless you hate the idea of time / money management and learning how to cook (I once ate pasta for 3 weeks until I learned how to cook something substantial). It's all one big experience.

Everyone finds their little group either in or out of their own halls and you're allowed to spend as-much time in other peoples hall as you want. So that's often what occurs. As for parties, they're allowed in the kitchen areas and also occur; optional attendance. :-P

Seriously, the only major downside for me, the only real downside at all, was that the fire alarms are terrifying!!! Hahaha.
