Interesting that WSOp has just opened up. Assuming they're looking to recruit EW and Acoustic Ops as well as Crewmen, it looks like they want to ramp up the training stream early to start populating a new aircraft type of the MPA/MMA variety.
Of course they haven't announced this yet (and maybe won't until the next SDSR - 2015/16?), but the MoD have an aspiration to close the maritime capability gap that they created in 2010 and the HoC Defence Select Committee have recommended that the cancelled Nimrod MRA4 is replaced with something, so maybe now is the time to dust off the bunting.
There are a few ex Nimrod guys in Oz and NZ (seen several on the news searching for the Malaysian jet) together with a number in the US and Canada. The US 'RAF Seedcorn' chaps are instructing the USN on their new P8 Poseidon at Jax in Florida and also helping them develop the aircraft systems and tactics at Pax River, so standby for an announcement of a few jets similar to this (the so called Defence Secretary accountant chappie, Hammond, was out in the US and Jacksonville last week)
If this does come to pass, then the job of WSOp on the P8 would be pretty awesome (as it was on the Nimrod MR2 and MRA4), but its a big gamble hoping that the Govt of the day signs up to this capability again. However, like the lottery, you'll never win unless you apply.
Good luck to anyone who puts pen to paper (or however you apply nowadays) you'll have a ball with some cutting edge kit. It was pretty much the same as we had on the MRA4 , but Cameron saw fit to pour £3.5 Billion down the drain, together with a whole raft of experience, so the few maritime seedcorn who will have to regenerate the function will have their work cut out creating new Squadrons / Operations / Simulator / OCU etc etc. I'd love to help out, but like so many others I've moved on to greener pastures.
It's all yours guys!
