what are student unions for? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I need to know.

Origami Bullets

They fulfil a variety of functions, including
- advice services (eg for academic or accommodation problems)
- organising and funding societies
- student media - at Manchester we have a print weekly newspaper, online radio and online TV.
- nightlife - though Manchester SU can concentrate on other things because there are a lot of other options locally. We do, however, have one of the biggest gig venues, the Academy
- charitable fundraising opportunities
- volunteering opportunities

Essentially, they're run by students for students to provide the non-academic aspect of uni life.
