Edinburgh is my insurance choice. Do I need to apply for accommodation there?

I'm quite certain that you do. When you apply for accommodation, they should ask you about conditional/unconditional and firm/insurance.
They allocate accommodation in batches so those who are definitely unconditional firm get first pick and are guaranteed a place.

When you apply, you won't be guaranteed a room as it's not your first choice. You should still apply anyway, just in case. I don't think they get back to you until your results are in and you know where you're going. Then they'll allocate you to the leftover rooms.
