UCL says 7 portions a day - making this work

I feel like I can't even get 5 portions a day, now 7? :s-smilie:

7 portion of veg + all the other foodgroups you're supposed to hit = more than daily recommended calories.

You'd be looking at under 100 calories for 5 portions of vegetables, probably safely under 150 for 7. Go on a 15 minute walk and you'll have burned those calories off. Make it a 25 minute walk and you can enjoy some sweet fruit in your diet too.
this is totally a trick to stimulate the economy
FFS How hard is it to throw a load of random veg into a stir fry/ bolognese/ chilli/ soup, heck even on top of a pizza or some salad on a burger. Even supernoodles, I used to boil up some frozen peas, carrots and broccoli and chuck it in. I used to work as a waitress and it seriously used to cheese me off how much salad was scraped into our bins. We were only a little hotel bar, but every lunchtime the bin needed emptied. It's ridiculous how many people in this country grow up "hating" salad.

How much is a portion though? Is one apple a 'portion', or two apples? how about three grapes, or 10 grapes? Or 25g of spinach or 100g of spinach. Until they make it clear and widely known what a comprises a 'portion', making claims about how many portions is appropriate is pointless.


A lot of supermarkets show how many handfuls/pieces etc. make up 5 a day on the packaging

I've never understood 'hating salad' - I absolutely love all kinds of lettuce, tomatoes, celery, spring onions, radishes, beets, peppers, etc, etc. :drool:

It's quite easy to meet some of these targets by, for example, making a nice big chili and then dividing it up into portions for the freezer. The chili can have aubergine, courgette, onion, tomato, peppers and even things like sweetcorn or carrots, as well as the mince or quorn.

Meat in excess, especially red meat, is pretty damaging to your health. 'Excess' means more than just a small amount.

Dairy products cause a lot of allergies and other health difficulties. Humans are not designed to consume the milk of other animals regularly or in the sort of concentrated form found in cheese, etc.

I usually have about 5 portions throughout the day - including a fresh juice in the morning. Why not try a morning smoothie or something? That'll tick off 3 or 4 in one go.

Smoothies and juices are not that great really. They are often very fattening and do not have the same vitamin delivery in a form your body can utilise as whole fruit does.

juice or blend them and have a smoothie carry it with you like you would a bottle of water and drink it throughout the day

I prefer to believe the results of the largest scientific study of the subject ever conducted, which showed clear relationships between shortened life span and excessive red meat consumption.
