Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Re: TSR Bollywood Society
Agent Vinod is a great film! I totally loved it. The only thing I would say is that it could have been shorter by 15-20 mins .Strong story, some fabulous locations (12 countries!!) and great action with a touch of romance. Saif could win a second national award next year. Looking forward to seeing this as a franchise.
This is the time for action thrillers it seems. First Don 2 then 'Players', now 'Agent Vinod' and we've still got YRF's 'Ek Tha Tiger' w/ Salman-Kat on Eid, Abbas Mustan's 'Race 2' and Aamir's 'Dhoom 3' to come.Last edited by Most Competitive; 24-03-2012 at 12:46. -
Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyCame across a trailer when I went to me cousin's house. Looks pathetic. Just look like a cheap, laughable, cheesy version of James Bond.(Original post by Most Competitive)

Talk about originality. I bet the director of Agent Vinod must have been watching Allistair Mcgowan's impressions of James Bond.
No originality whatsoever. -
Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyIt's certainly not James Bond. The character is very different to the Bond character for a start. Also, remember that the spy thriller genre had been established waay before any of the Bond films, so the originality argument can't be used against it.(Original post by The_Male_Melons)

The only reason why it has been compared to Bond is because of the suit Saif wears on the posters. However, in the film, he wears that suit to one formal occasion and he's only in it for a couple of minutes.
I can assure you that it's more down to earth than any of the Bond films. You'll just have to see it. It's relevant to the goings on at the current time whereas Bond just came because of the paranoia in relation to Russians, and went from there.
You'll just have to see it

So a "wearing a suit, not a suit" is the main difference that you tagging your hopes on.
Whilst James Bond did come about from the cold war, doesn't mean that other spies films or dramas from Hollywood does not focus on current times.
Of course, you could argue that Agent Vinod (reading the daily mail as there was some link) comes from the paranoia of Pakistan. Not sure as I have not watched the film and have no intention watching poor Asians films. -
Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyIf you have no intention, then why are you on this thread? Why not waste your life and designate an entire thread to why you hate 'poor Asian films'. I thought this thread was for people to share their LOVE for these films?(Original post by The_Male_Melons)

Also seek some understanding at to why people wish to watch such films?
I am sure I have free speech and hence can express my hate...

Re: TSR Bollywood Society
I saw Karan Johar's 'My Name Is Khan' the other day on blu-ray disc. I would say that it's Karan Johar's best film and SRK's best ever performance.
India's official entry to the 83rd Academy Awards was Aamir Khan productions' 'Peepli [live]'. I think, considering that 'My Name Is Khan' made it to the reminder list, meaning that it was eligible for awards in ANY of the categories (best picture, best director etc), it would have definitely won the award for best foreign film if India submitted it instead. They missed a trick. -

Yeah, no problem. Anytime

Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyPeepli Live is one of the best Indian movies I have EVER seen and is WAY better than MNIK. Such a powerful, yet entertaining movie, typical of Aamir Khan's productions.(Original post by Most Competitive)

But I don't get this notion of Indian movies trying to win an Oscar. India has its own awards. Why does it need validation from an American film award body? It's just sad looking to others for validation of your own efforts. If you've made a great Indian movie, you should be content with that, not trying to get a pat on the head from Hollywood. -
Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyI guess it's the fact that they think those film authorities would be less biased and less corrupt. Or that it means more if you're judged to be good by outsiders than one of your own. Lots of international film festivals have recognised bollywood films and even the Oscars have recognised AR Rahman and Satyajit Ray..so it's not like the quality is not there. I don't think Hollywood should be compared with Bollywood as both are different types of cinema. Bollywood is more musical compared to Hollywood so i don't think a fair comparison can be made. When Bollywood makes an A class movie it really hits the heart strings more than a Hollywood movie, but Hollywood does make more "quality" movies on average compared to Bollywood per year. However, we do produce more movies so it's understandable.(Original post by bolly_mad)

I totally agree in not comparing and getting validity from external sources. I wish Bollywood would make a lot more unique cinema rather than remakes and sequels. Movies like Lagaan, 3 idiots, taare zameen par are the type of movies that should be made. -
Re: TSR Bollywood Societycome on mate you're not even watching asian films, or the films recommended to you by us and then you generalise them as being all bad. How many of the asian films, being mentioned here, have you completely watched? Have you seen 3 idiots, lagaan, taare zameen par, Dor, Bol, Ramchand Pakistani, Khuda ke liye, Udaan, peepli live, Life in a metro, page 3 etc(Original post by The_Male_Melons)

It's like someone going on one of the International society threads eg Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi etc and making stereotypes/generalisations but not willing to engage in it. -
Re: TSR Bollywood SocietySocieties in Asia are like that. there is a song for every occasion. happy, sad, life and death. You can still a song when you're sad. It will just be a sadder song..might be a qawwali.(Original post by The_Male_Melons)
No. Are you mad? We'd all be singing and dancing. I am depressed, let's sing a sad song whilst dancing and jumping off a stairs...
i especially like it when they have background singers who sing a song that reflects the mood of the main characters. I think it intensifies the song.
