TSR Bollywood Society
Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyYou're so lucky! I'm not from India originally so I've never really had any reason to go - but there are so many beautiful cities in India that I'd just love to see. Apart from Mumbai I also want to go to Delhi, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Kolkata and others! Hopefully one day that will become a reality.(Original post by singh224)
I only have my parents and 1 sister and all my other family relatives live in India or US
.
You should really go India and see the cinemas there.. here its nothing lol in comparison plus I'm going this summer so I'll be enjoying luxurious life there :P
Most of my immediate family live in the UK, but no-one is as obsessed with Bollywood as I am. Sometimes makes me feel slightly outcast, but I'm proud of the fact that I'm born and bred British and would love to make a living in India one day.

Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyI've watched some remakes before the originals and i havent seen agneepath yet but ive heard its good. here is a good link(Original post by asif007)
I've recently downloaded a copy of Kahaani from the internet but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I had a flick through the movie and it looks very intriguing so it's definitely at the top of my list, along with a few others I haven't seen yet.
I have a habit of watching remakes of Bollywood films before watching the originals. For example, I've seen Don 1-2 and Agneepath but haven't seen the originals yet... I really should though, seeing as Amitabh Bachchan re-defined the angry young man role in Bollywood. And the fact that there is a remake of Zanjeer in development just goes to show how his films are timeless classics - so they must be worth watching! I will download some of those and report back with my opinions soon.
Are there any other older movies (i.e. from before 1990) that you recommend? I've seen Sholay, Kabhi Kabhie and the original Umrao Jaan, but that's about it...

I will reply more fully when im back in the arvo but here is a list of good 80s movies. I've seen some of them so i defo agree..particularly Mr India, Tehzaab
, Maine pyar kiya and for some more hard hitting art movies there is Nikaah and Bazaar. -

If you want to formally join TSR Bollywood Society, you can click the link to subscribe on this page:

It's not an absolute requirement though, most users I've seen don't officially join the society - they just make posts in this thread. Hope that helps.
What was the last Bollywood movie you saw? And what did you think of it?
Thanks so much for the link!
The last Bollywood film I saw was No One Killed Jessica, (I know it's a loooong time ago) which was really good and it really surprised me. Rani and Vidya's acting was just too good and brought the characters to life and the plot was really good.
What about you, Asif what was the last Bwood film you saw?

Thank you so much for sharing that link! I'm already following the suggestions quite closely and attempting to find them on the internet! Will report back soon when I have some opinions.
Currently the oldest movie I've seen is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). But part of me thinks that Bollywood movies were made with much more care and attention back in the late 80's/early 90's. Some of the best romances in Bollywood were made during this period so I will definitely find something I enjoy! -

No worries - if you need any more links or suggestions, let me know. Happy to help.
I have 3 ways of watching Bollywood movies: cinema, internet and DVD. The last one I saw in the cinema was Housefull 2, which was amazing. The comic timing was spot-on, acting was flawless and the jokes were very funny. I loved it a lot more due to the fact that I'm a big fan of Akshay Kumar and John Abraham. I'm hoping to catch Vicky Donor tomorrow (better late than never!) and Tezz next weekend.
The last film I saw on the internet was Singham (for the 2nd time) - I just love this one so much. Particularly the action sequences (which are always very fancy in Ajay Devgan/Rohit Shetty films) and the romance. People say that Singham was just a copy of Dabangg, but I believe it is completely different in many ways. The sense of patriotism and emphasis on Singham being an honest, hard-working man rather than corrupt is what makes it so endearing. Plus the fact that Ajay Devgan is a great actor and has great chemistry with any actress, especially Kaajal Aggarwal in this film and Kajol in his early films (before they got married).
The last films I saw on DVD (at home during the holiday) were Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Gunaah, Salaam Namaste and Dhoom 2. As you can see, I love virtually any Bollywood movie for great acting, fantastic songs, glamour, colour and very hot actresses.

Re: TSR Bollywood Society(Original post by asif007)
Lol, "movie guru"! I've never been called that before! Your compliment deserves a positive rep - just gave you one.
Absolutely, I was very disappointed with Action Replayy. I forced myself to watch it even after reading some scathing reviews about it - and I still had quite high expectations because I love both Akshay and Aishwarya. It was a waste of 2 hours - the story was bland and the jokes crashed badly. The only good thing about it was the songs - although I rarely dislike a film for it's songs.
I'm the complete opposite to you - I love all Bollywood movies apart from a very small minority. I'm rarely as critical as I was above - hence I loved Bodyguard and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Not only do I love the movies so much but I'm a firm believer that the Bollywood lifestyle is something to aspire to, which is why I want to go on a holiday to India as soon as possible to experience it for myself.
I also can't wait for Talaash, Ishaqzaade and Rowdy Rathore. They all appear to be very unique and well made - Aamir and Akshay especially make great efforts in any movie they lead. Arjun Kapoor's debut in Ishaqzaade will be exciting to see, and I have high expectations for it's success as I think he will make a great jodi with Parineeti Chopra (who was brilliant in Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl). Although I'm slightly annoyed that Arjun's debut has already been fabricated - apparently the producers keep raving that he was randomly "found" through Facebook and cast on the spot because they thought he "looked like a good actor". But we all know how that's a blatant lie because he's Boney Kapoor's son and has been working with film-makers for most of his life. Just makes me feel bad for the hundreds of struggling actors in India who can't secure great roles because they're all being taken up by star sons and daughters.
I don't usually watch Bollywood movies on the internet while they're still in the cinema because the quality isn't usually that good. I tend to wait until the films come out on DVD before buying a copy or downloading one off the internet. But I found this website recently where the quality is decent. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
http://movies.andhrawala.net/2012/04...ndi-movie.html
Hope that helps.
For his own sake I hope Arjun is a good actor, or else he'll end up making a fool of himself like Zayad Khan, Tushar Kapoor, Fardeen Khan etc etc. These people have lots of links and thus lots of opportunities but ultimately they also have a lot of pressure on them to do well, and if they don't do well their failure can be seen and mocked by the whole world.
Cheers for the link
I'm hoping for a a dvd rip to come out some time

I loved Singham more than Dabang. Ajay's heavy personality was amazing in that film. -

Re: TSR Bollywood Society
It seems to have become traditional for leading actors in Bollywood to work with the same director at least 3 times in a few years. These directors obviously share great relationships with their lead actors, which contributes to their films becoming so successful. So which of these actor-director partnerships do you think is the best in terms of success and publicity? Or any others that you think deserve the most attention?

-Ajay Devgan and Rohit Shetty (Golmaal 1-4, Singham, All The Best, Bol Bachchan)
-Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra (DDLJ, Mohabbatein, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi)
-Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Chopra (Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Veer Zaara and the untitled Diwali film)
-Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan (De Dana Dan, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Bhagam Bhag, Khatta Meetha, Hera Pheri)
-Salman Khan and David Dhawan (Partner, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge)
-Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, My Name Is Khan)
-Akshay Kumar and Suneel/Dharmesh Darshan (Mere Jeevan Saathi, Dhadkan, Dosti, Bewafaa, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya)Last edited by asif007; 02-05-2012 at 18:08. -
Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyI think I've realised over the years that Bollywood movies deserve more priority in my life than studies. Many times I've chosen to watch great films instead of studying!(Original post by HumiT)
I thought I'd multi-task by typing my assignment and watch Ladies vs Ricky Bahl. It's safe to say in 1 hour all I've done is open my text book

Good choice - Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl was a pretty good film. Not as good as Band Baaja Baaraat but still a great execution IMO. Are you looking forward to Lootera?

No probs

I've downloaded Andaaz Apna Apna but haven't watched it all the way through yet. As for Karan Arjun and Lamhe, I can't find any copies of those via my many internet sources. So I will have to start searching for a good retail shop that sells a wide range of Bollywood movies! Will hopefully start looking in Bradford and Manchester then move on to Green Street/Ilford/Wembley/Southall. So many Bollywood movies to find, so little time!
I did pick up 2 bargain films in Bradford today though. Pukar (Anil Kapoor/Madhuri Dixit) and Daag (Sanjay Dutt). Anyone heard of those? If so, what did you think?
-
Re: TSR Bollywood Societythnx , will give them a try(Original post by Bright.Inspiration.)
Ones without ash are better
try: Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Fashion, Kurbaan, Dil Chata Hai, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Race ... a few of my fav ones.
'Shaitaan' is also a very good movie - it's not too well known outside india since it was a smaller budget film, but it was really good.

Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyPukar deserves a watch. Anil Kapoor won the National Film Award for best actor. It's one of Anil's and Rajkumar Santoshi's best films.(Original post by asif007)

I've wanted to see Daag ever since I saw Raj Kanwar's earlier film Jeet with Salman Khan and Sunny Deol.
You didn't have to go to all that trouble to watch AAA - it's on youtube (2h 30 or so).
Yash Chopra's Lamhe is a film that was waay ahead of its time. Definitely worth a watch.
Karan Arjun was good.
Enjoy!
Saw Tezz the other day in cinemas. It's a very well executed, (pretty much) taut thriller that provides wholesome entertainment and possesses quite a bit of heart too. Thumbs up!.
CONFIRMED: the teaser of Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger is releasing next Friday with YRF's own 'Ishaqzaade'. Looking forward to seeing Salman in such a role.Last edited by Most Competitive; 04-05-2012 at 21:01. -

Finally a place I can share my passion for bollywood! I'm more of a fan of the bollywood tunes than the actual films, but still a bollywood fanatic nonetheless (currently watching the incredible Devdas)...does anyone know where I can find a collection of Udit Narayan songs?!

Re: TSR Bollywood SocietyThis is the best place for me to discuss Bollywood films, music, actors/actresses and gossip as I don't know anyone else who loves Bollywood as much as I do!(Original post by shanban)
