Mature students

I'm male, 24 and going to be studying Linguistics this year.

I'm not planning on living in halls for the first year because I don't really want to be sharing with younger people that are still learning things I have already done. I am looking to share a house with people that are a bit older but are also new to the university and to the city.

My interests include Poker, Noise Drone & Doom genres of music, Psychedelic art and experiences, Meditation, and I am looking to get in to rock climbing a lot more this year.

If your a first year or possibly second or third and have similar interests let me know because I am going to start organising a house share in the next few months.

Cheers

Hey man!

I'll be 28 when I start my Biomedical Science degree at Bangor in September and I'm feeling the same way about not wanting to share with younger people.

Interest wise I'd say music is probably top of that list...I listen to pretty much everything: http://www.last.fm/user/TomH86

I also am interested in Science (obviously, ha), History, Art and cycling. I'm looking to get into hiking more and Bangor seems like a very appropriate place to do that.

I'm currently freaking out about finding a place to stay so this thread is a bit of a godsend to be honest.

Hey tom, yeah we sound pretty similar haha, I like the fact you listen to ween  we should try and find some more like minded people in a similar situation and sort some accomodation out.

What are you doing atm until you start uni? Im in manchester atm but moving to london for six months cos ive just been offered a job there at a casino until september.

If anyone else is interested feel free to post about yourself!
I'm from Wrexham. I'm on an access course at the moment and will be finishing In June. Over the summer I plan on trying to get a job to earn some extra cash.

I'll keep my eyes open on here and try to find some other people. I'm definitely up for sharing if you are though!

Tom.

Yeh I imagine halls to be awful if your with 18 year olds and being 24-25. Im gunna be studying linguistics, are you waiting for an offer?
Hi All,

I'm Shaun, I've accepted a place at Bangor studying French and Spanish. I'm 27 but will be 28 in September when I come. I have been looking at halls because I don't really mind where I live or age groups but can understand the views on this.

Would be up on house sharing but my main concern is funding as I've been working since I was 18 in well paid jobs so not having any money is my biggest issue

If not I'm sure we can all meet up.
I'm 21 interested in experiencing the gay scene, anyone else here game?
Hey Shaun, I'm studying Linguistics so might be able to help each other out in some ways. I think house sharing is cheaper than student accommodation since its like 100 a week where as house shares are like 300 a month, you have bills and stuff on top but you get a living room etc not just a single room and a kitchen. At the open day they were saying how if you fall under the household income bracket you get 1500 a year as well which is pretty decent to help pay for stuff like rent and if your over 25 you automatically fall under the bracket.

Where abouts do you live Shaun? I'm in London at the moment and Vox Celeste is from Wrexham.

I've made a group called Bangor mature students which should be up soon, Ill link it here for people to join

Cool buddy, yeah I'm thinking it might be cheaper but I'm to far away to organize anything. I live in Fleet, hampshire. I would be up for this but the question is how we arrange viewings and stuff. I would like to know more about this 1500 bracket which I think is interesting and will certainly help. I would prefer to be with like-minded people and if you're doing linguistics then we can certainly help each other.

Let me know when the group is up.
When you apply through ucas if you are over 25 your household income is automatically zero because they wont count your parents. Bangor automatically give students with incomes of less than 20k a year a 1500 bursary every year. I think we could organize viewings through websites like spareroom and then one or more of us can veiw. My parents live in wales so I can get down to bangor pretty easily.

What are your interests and stuff shaun? Mine are in the original post if you wanna check that out.

Sorry for jumping in... but if you are worried about funding and are giving up your job to come to uni, they won't take your finances into account, but if they do for any reason, you can request a predicted year assessment instead which will be based on a forcast of what you expect to earn while studying.
When I came to uni, my partner had a good job but he was also going to be studying and this is how I got my full funding!
Hope it helps! Happy house hunting... see you in September!

I'm starting this September at Bangor and will be studying History!
I'm going to be 30 by then so deffo won't be living in halls but will be renting a house with my boyfriend.
I'm just glad to know that there are going to be more mature students about! :-)
Hey folks,
I'm 32 and will be graduating from Bangor this summer, hoping to go on to a MSc next year (Also in Bangor). Don't worry about the whole age gap thing. There's loads of mature students around. In fact on my course, the majority were 21+. No one really cares about age in truth, at least in my experience.

Best of luck to you all and Croeso i Fangor/ Welsome to Bangor
Guys, I'm kinda interested in getting a shared house now.

Have a look at what I found and we need 4 people for it.

Let me know otherwise I'll just go for halls.
Hi All,

I can't see anyone on here over 30 and I'm 58 at the end of September! Does this make me a mature mature student? AND I'm in halls for the first year! Is that brave, foolhardy or just plain stupid? Fortunately, I don't live too far way, so can escape home at weekends if necessary.
