I don't really know that book but yeah I don't know where social background would come into it.. Maybe the socialism of the country?? Is there not a character within it that is really socialistic?

I have asked lots of people about this and it seems to be causing problems as to what is meant by 'social and cultural setting'. The general consensus is that it's referring to the social setting of the time (e.g. in 'der Vorleser' the social setting is apparently post-war Germany) and its effects on the development of the story. Edexcel haven't made anything clear so there are lots of interpretations on what it could be!

Is anyone doing the geographical area for the research essay?

Posted from TSR Mobile

Hiya!

I'm doing the geographical area research based essay on Berlin!

I'm finding it so hard to revise as there is so much that could come up and my teacher is not very helpful.

I'm on a gap year as well and doing the Alevel in one year so I am worried that my german isn't going to be as good as other peoples!

Has your teacher predicted anything that will come up? My teacher is useless! Have literally learnt the whole of the German Alevel myself!

Woah i havent done any of them yet!!! What would religion even be like in Berlin! I hate how hard it is to find stuff online!! Also I think the essay is far too broad- I wish they would just bring back coursework for the research based essay, it would be so much better!!

Is everyone planning to just memorise some essays for the research bit and then hope that a relevant question comes up?

You will be expected to have done numerous character studies as part of
your work in preparation for this question. The reading of criticism to
support ideas will also be expected. You must show your knowledge of the
characters as well as evaluating their importance.

This is similar to the first question with a slight twist. You must show how
the character(s) has/have developed throughout the work. You must show
your knowledge of the characters as well as evaluating their importance.

You will be expected to have studied important scenes within the chosen
work, for example the transformation of Shen Te in Der gute Mensch, or the
death of Tobias in BahnwärterThiel. You must show your knowledge of the
scene as well as evaluating its importance.

Here you have the opportunity to say what you enjoyed about a particular
work, and why.

You will be looking at the importance of the work today.Modern works
could still be discussed here as they are likely to involve modern issues and
problems.
Was will uns der Autor/Regisseur sagen, meinen Sie?

You will be able to choose the most important aspect of the chosen work.
You must show your knowledge of this theme as well as evaluating its
importance.

The English under each one is the guidance for what a perfect essay should include for that question. Hope this is useful!
