It well pissed me off this year but due to the fact that our sad excuse for a manager contributed 15 million quid to the "save the senegalese" fund we could do nothing to stop it!

I bet they do, wouldn't you. It must be really annoying for them having built those great Unis down there only to discover that all the smart people live hundreds of mile to the north. Poor foolish southern softies. I wouldn't go to Oxford/Cambridge anyway. I would fail the interview, as I would probably leave after saying I'm sorry but why is everyone here so boring. Are you all automatons. Clever they maybe, but clever comes from learning (anyone who can be bothered can do this). Intelligence now that is a different and an entirely impossible to learn talent. Let them have their noses in the air, whilst quoting Moliere. Fact remains intelligence reigns, book smart being neither here nor there

i think your missing a point somewhere, what you want to know is what is the proportion of people at state school who, if were given the same standard of teaching /facilities are capable of getting 3 a's.

how can people in state schools expect to get AAA when they are only taught half the syllabus??? (i was only taught 4 topics in my p3 exam, i tried to teach myelf the rest when he said he wasnt gonna bother teaching us the rest, but i just couldnt make sence of it all, and i was one of the lucky ones, they didnt teach the people sitting m2 anything because he was too busy puttin some people in for ms. )

intelligence means PORN , the ability to analyse porn for its intricate intrinsic features.

I applied to Cambridge and had 3 interviews. The first one was a general one.. stuff like why I wanted to go to Cambridge, why I wanted to do the course I applied for (Comp Sci). In the second one I had Maths problems to solve, but they weren't that hard and in the third interview, I was asked about Physics stuff. Tests aren't always set and I think some people only have two interviews and not three. Also, you're expected to know about current affairs, but I wasn't asked anything on that (I have a friend who was though). I suppose it's just so they can see you have opinions on stuff.. or something.

some people in private schools do work hard, but my opinion is that the majority have such an easy life because they have all of daddies money to spend, that they don't have to. I just want to smack prince harry when I see his toff face.

Well, you probably wouldn't know. I have attended a private school (I got a scholarship, my family couldn't afford the fees). My school later turned into a state school. I have noticed both the quality of teaching and the application of the students slip in this time.

well i am guessing in a private school, the headmaster can expel a child much easier than a state school. The reason our state schools do so bad is because they are full of wasters who have no intention to learn, and just make it harder for everyone else who does. In private schools this is not so true (my opinion).

This is, unfortunately, true.

Who ever said that Private Schools get more porn must have gone to a dodgey school. I made a VERY good living during high school by distributing adult material. I made sure that my school had a healthy suppy of "material".

Some interesting comments methinks, perchance I might contribute. While I agree that there is definitely a strong reluctance from these universities to let people like me in (Mancunian by birth) I think they have a reponsibilty to take the best minds from wherever they can find them. If they are not taking the best then sooner or later the standard of their courses/graduates will be exposed. I say let them carry on, in about 10 years I look forward to making mincemeat out of their graduates in the workplace. Fact is at Oxbridge, if you aren't one of the local Ponsenby-Smythe family or some other aristocrat, then you need to be exceptional in every way to get in. Under the current A level system, too many people get AAAA for these establishments to decide on that alone.
I must admit, if they let me in it would lower the tone completely. Unless they already have 3 day drinking competitions with wall to wall vomiting (mid week fixtures) . Followed by a weekend of debauchery. Oxbridge sounds like too much work to me, for not enough KUDOS!! Me I'll go to Leeds or something, get smashed for 3.5 years then work a bit.

Well said mensandan (I would take you on at your competition and can guarantee I can vomit over a far superior distance to you).

:-)

it would depend on how many burgers I ate before. My vomit distance is quite good because I have a distinct size advantage being taller or as tall than most my friends.

I tell you what, once you get to uni get into the drinking team. My brother did this at Bristol a few years ago. They used to travel around other universities for away matches, then a home fixture the next week. Now that did get messy. You never know we could end up going head to head. The best one is the boat race (nice oxbridge theme) 5 men per team (or hockey ladies) 10 pints. Stand in a line, down in 1, to the last man who does 2 then back to the front. This is a knock out tournament with 16 teams so the eventual winners will have had 8 pints in the course of an hour and a bit. This dear friends is what university is all about, not books and learning that is what you final term is about. Don't forget this wisdom, guide you it will
