Psychology please help

Hi I wonder if anyone could help me. I am currently looking to follow my ambition to study psychology. I'm 47 and to be honest don't really know where to start. I've looked and universities near me but am unsure on what Qualifications I would need. I have heard of access to higher education courses, does anyone know which course I should take for psychology? Any el wold be really appreciated.
thanks
Hi Tina .

What qualifications do you already have? Do you have any kind of experience that could be useful? Also which area of the country would you be looking to study in?

Entry requirements for mature students will vary from place to place. Of course the usual path is to get a few A Levels under your belt, but this isn't an option for many as it takes a few years and a lot of effort! You will usually also need GCSE English and Maths.

Yes, an access course is a possibility but you would have to talk to the admissions departments of the actual place you would like to attend to see what their own personal preferences are. Some might say that whatever you already have is good enough but you didn't say so I can't say for sure.

Hi
Ive nearly completed my first year in Criminology and Psychology at Leeds Met. I just emailed the head of department and told her my life story and experiences. My experiences got my place at uni. I am also on track to getting a first, not bad for some who flunked hogh school
If that fails, look into a access course. But definitely look into email the cpurse leader and ask.

Hi Tina, and welcome to TSR :wavey:

I've moved your thread over to the mature students forum

I think the best route for you to take would be an Access to HE course. It's a one year full time college course that's designed for people just like you, who are returning to education after a number of years away. It's accepted by all universities :yep: There's some information, and a course search, here http://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/Pages/Default.aspx

Access to HE comes with different specialisations, and so you need to have a look at which your local college(s) offer, and cross reference that with which ones the relevant unis will accept.

Hi thanks for the reply. I do have life experiences and voluntary work. I think I will call the Head Dept and try to speak to them .
Is it too late for this September?

Life experience and relevant voluntary work will help, but they may not be sufficient for all universities. For instance, there's quite a lot of maths in psychology, and so it's entirely reasonable to think that they want proof that you're numerate.

Have a look on the unis website and see what it says about mature students and psychology. If the info is absent, unclear or insufficient, email someone within the department who has "admissions tutor" or "admissions coordinator" or similar in their job title, as they'll be the best people to talk to - very often the head of department will have no routine involvement in admissions.

It may or may not be too late for this September - it depends on whether or not they have places left. However, psychology is a very popular subject, and you have missed the January 15th deadline for equal consideration. You should include this question in your email to the universities.

Hi Tina,
I have a level 3 in Children and Young People's Workforce and this got me onto the Psychology degree at Derby as in my role as an Early Years educator I have dealt with child psychology. You have missed the 15th January deadline so it may be pushing it to get an offer for a September start. But then, if you don't push your luck you don't get anything so I'd say it's definitely work investigating! Should this come to nothing I'd advise you to do an Access course as another noter mentioned. It is a one year course is accepted by all universities and you could choose the social sciences modules which will cover subjects such as Sociology and Psychology so you'll not enter into a Psychology degree completely blind.
Hope this helps a little

First thing have a look at local colleges that offer access courses they may help you, make sure they include maths and English at GCSE level.
If that doesn't work look further ahead at the distance learning centre they offer access courses which you complete from home similar to OU.
Final option head down the OU route
