The student room!! HELP!!!Meet new people...

Hi everyone.....

So I'm going to uni in September and was wondering how everyone else is getting on with their applications and offers?? What are you studying and why??

I'm 22 and really nervous about starting in September and meeting new people and I'm not going into accommodation either.... I'm sure it'll be quite difficult to make new friends and be sociable? Or am I reading too much into it??

You'll have lots of opportunities to meet people when you get to uni - not going into accommodation shouldn't affect your chances of making new friends. Many people at uni find they don't really click with their flatmates anyway but get on well with people on their course or in university groups/societies.

Almost everyone I met at uni said that they felt nervous when they first went; they were worried about being with people they didn't know all the time, and the possibility of not finding anyone they liked being with. If that's any consolation, you're not alone! It can be a nerve-wracking time but you won't be the only one feeling like you do. People at uni will want to get to know other people - just don't make it difficult for people to get to know you and be friendly with you and you'll be fine. So accept invitations for, or suggest, coffee/lunch after lectures, join sports clubs or groups that interest you, go to the socials during freshers week etc.

if your not shy and you are freindly talkative and nice with everyone you will be fine

Hey!! Thanks for the advice :-) I'll look into it.
I am very friendly and outgoing etc, and I understand there's going to be alot of people in the same boat as me before we start, its just finding those people also who haven't already made their friends beforehand.

I also work 12 hour night shifts in a nursing home, I hope I'm going to have time to study and socialise.....
