Essay help needed - How have different Italian regimes used Sport for political ends?

Hey all,

My final assessed essay for one of my modules is on the question “How have different Italian regimes used Sport for political ends? Discuss with specific examples.” I’ve made some progress, but at just 1,200 words in (the essay is 2,000-2,500 words!) I’ve come to a bit of a dead end.

So far, I’ve discussed Mussolini’s use of sport to create the idea of the new fit fascist Italian, the amicable rivalry between cyclists Bartali and Coppi, and the commercialisation of sport in the 1980’s, specifically A.C. Milan and Ferrari. But I’m now at a bit of a lost cause, I’ve scoured through a few books and not found much that could help me out.

What I’d ideally be looking for would be a couple more examples of how any Italian regime, political or otherwise, has used sport for its own means.

Any help or guidance at all on this would be hugely helpful!

Many thanks
