Reneging on a training contract

I have a friend who has been accepted on to a training contract and has been reimbursed for their LPC and GDL tuition fees by the law firm.

The money has been exchanged and the tuition fees have now been repaid.

Recently, however, they have considered reneging on the contract in favour of another position.

What are their options? Will they have to pay the law firm back?
