OT! Are you just posting in all the threads or something?
Yeah, I think it's the top five in every subject.

Good morning Ronove! :p:

Anyway, I agree that it is the top 5 marks, but anyone who gets those marks gets Top 5. Anyway I guess we'll see when people post their Top 5 UMS marks lol.
We had about 3 or 4 in our year last yr.
We had around 10... but then again half my year are swots, so it was to be expected really.

I'm going to sound really stupid but what does UMS stand for? Also, do you have to get a top mark overall, or just in the exam? O and when did ypu get your letter? ( I don't expect one I'm just interested, i've never heard of it before)

Hi there Kitty123. UMS stands for Uniform Mark Scale and is the conversion of your marks per paper onto a total scaled mark upon the UMS chart. In languages, there are 4 which are out of 90 each, and these are added up, to give you a total UMS mark out of 360 for any language you do.

I'm not sure how the examining bodies award the 'Top 5' awards, but I suppose that you'll have to get possibly one of the top scores in the country in order to get them, i.e, 99-100% in all of your exams for a specific subject.

Finally from what I've read on TSR, you'll get a letter (should you get a 'Top 5') with your results on August 24.

I hope that has helped a little:rolleyes:

Haha! I know:eek: I can still remember actually doing the exams, and time has flown in my opinion, but now that the results are nigh, it'll probably be the longest two weeks of our lives:frown: I just want to see what grades I have got:p:

I know Edexcel give out Top 5/10 for A level but not sure if they also do it for GCSE. I have a feeling that they do though, because most of the 5 Music Specialist Schools do Edexcel GCSE Music and they're always going on about having loads of "top 5" students at GCSE level.
Hmmm...
Hey!

I am just awaiting A-level results but I'm sure it is only AQA who publish top 5 candidate awards. Reason? At GCSE I did OCR German (full course) and got 360/360 UMS but I didn't get any letter or notification. This surely has to prove that OCR does not...shame I didn't do AQA GCSE German instead :P

I have done AQA A level German but do not expect to get one of those... lol

I'm pretty sure Edexcel informs you or at least your examinations center that you got in the top 25. My physics teacher was telling us he had 4 students in the top 25 last year and physics for us is Edexcel based.

I think the reason why people only know about AQA is because lots of people do languages with AQA and languages are easier to score high in (because some people are fluent).
hey hey

me n my friend got a top 5 in english lit a couple of years ago at gcse for aqa! how random was that!

btw the explanation someone gave about it being the top 5 marks was spot on.

lol

Hey people..... I'm a fourth year (15 year old ) student from Northern Ireland- and I can explain what happens when you get a top 5 mark letter from AQA!

I sat my French GCSE a year early and got an A*.

However along with my results, I also received a letter from the Director General of AQA. It said exactly:

Dear Connor,

GCSE EXAMINATIONS- SUMMER 2007

I am very pleased to tell you that you are amongst the group of candidates that scored one of the top 5 marks in FRENCH A this summer. There were 100997 candidates entered for this examination so this is an exceptional result.

May I congratulate you on such and outstanding achievement and wish you every success with you future studies. Your center has been informed of your achievement.

Yours Sincerely,

Michael Cresswel.
Director General

Then it explained that scoring one of the top five marks doesn't mean that you scored one of the top five positions in Great Britain!

To give you a fair view of what type of marks you need to be scoring, my marks were:

Reading: 45/45 = UMS 90/90
Listening: 40/40 = UMS 90/90
Speaking: 40/40 = UMS 90/90
Coursework: 60/60 = UMS 90/90

Total 185/185 = UMS 360/360

However, my friend also received a letter from AQA syaing the same thing but his marks were:

Reading: 44/45 = UMS 90/90
Listening: 39/40 = UMS 90/90
Speaking: 40/40 = UMS 90/90
Coursework: 60/60 = UMS 90/90

So don't worry if you don't get full raw marks ! ! You're still in with a chance!

I hope that this has helped anyone inquiring about the Top 5 scheme !

Good luck to everyone sitting exams ! =] =]
