Los Angeles Community colleges help?!!!!!

Hi

I heard I was able to study 2 years in a community college then transfer for the last 2 years to a larger colleges, right? Could someone confirm ?
If that's true could you tell me a few community colleges in Los Angeles ?
I have a few other questions
1) Do they offer athletics, like NCAA ?
2) Is there any disadvantages by doing 2 years at a community college?
3) Do they have dorms or would I have to rent off campus?
4) Would it work out cheaper to do it that way?

Sorry, finally, I'm probably taking for A-Levels : French, Law and buisness (Or maybe swap one of those for psychology)
