I don't like music

What is Music?
Music consists of vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

But Why is Music so important to us?
Music is important to our lives because it lifts up the soul and releases some pressures in daily living. It also helps you express yourself in ways that you can't with normal speech and builds confidence. Music is also fun and enhances social development.

But some people are just not moved or interested by music and yes I am one of them!

Until I was 16 I listened to a little radio and some commercial music for teens from all genres, but in fact it was mainly to find out what other people my age liked and so i could find out if I liked it or no, at the time I was a bit curious.

Now I’m nearly 19 years old and for 2 to 3 years, I haven’t listened to any music, I have sometimes the feeling to be the only one like that.
For example, when i take the public transport, I see a lot of people wearing their headphones during their run. And me, I have no envy over listening to music for 1 hour, I even prefer listening to the sound of the train or the bus for one hour.

I never had a MP3 player, a smartphone or something else that is used to listen to music.

Even when I come back home, I never listen to music on my computer because I don’t like that so I relax with other means possible(surfing on the internet, going outside, listening to the sound of the city, sleeping, etc…)

Sometimes, I have people and friends who make me listen to metal, rock or rap and then ask me if I liked it but I am unable to answer. As I am no hypocrite, i clearly say no and for that I pass sometimes for someone bizarre.

As I think it is better living without music, some people find it sad or even impossible.
For me, true freedom is to live without music, especially when the lyrics to music mostly mean nothing and that is why I don’t understand people that are so commited to music, Music isn’t that extraordinary, it’s mostly about love with catch phrases that aims to stick in our heads. Sometimes, it even reeks superficiality.

But I do like music on one occasion, in fact the only music i listen to are the ones in movies or tv shows and I even find it necessary that movies and tv shows have music in them because music brings something much needed to them, to the characters, etc…

I don’t know, maybe I’m not normal
But ask yourself this question, is it that important to listen to music?

I hate to be 'rude', but... so?
I went through this for a bit and I literally never listened to any music what so ever, now I listen to a bit but not loads like some people do.
My boyfriend doesn't like music either. At first I thought it was a bit weird but really it's no different to people who don't like watching TV etc.

I know what you mean in a way, just sitting there listening to music for an hour does seem a bit of a waste of time but I enjoy doing that, fair enough if you don't though.

I find it strange how possessive over music most kids my age can be. In class they even can't help but sneak their headphones on and rather listen to that than the teacher. Like c'mon, is your hipster music really more important than your chemistry A level?

I like music but I'm not obsessed with it, I listen to it on the drive to school because there's nothing better to do, and that's mostly it. Sometimes I'll have music on in the background when I write/draw/play games and sometimes when I do work. I definitely don't like the mainstream rubbish that most teenagers do, ugh. And they always seem so defensive when I say I hate their music, they yell that it's amazing and that the music I like is crap, I just shrug and say, "So? It is crap, but I still like it" xD.

Also everyone seems highly surprised when I don't recognise an apparently popular song, or a popular singer.
I couldn't live the life I do without music. I listen to music and create/write my own. It's fundamental to living for me, and the majority of people who live on this planet.
Fair enough if you don't like music - who am I to judge your preferences? I can't say I understand it personally, however, seeing as to me, music is just beautiful and enriching. I don't know how you must feel, but I'm not going to say you're wrong, or whatever, because you can like what you want
While I do like music, I'm not one of those people who seems obsessively driven to listen to it at every possible opportunity. I can't identify with the types who you can look away from for 3 seconds and they've stuffed their headphones in by the time you turn back around.

It does nothing for me if I go for a run (I don't like not being able to hear what's going on around me), I prefer to read on the bus, I can't listen to it whilst studying, and it's rare I can just sit and listen to music and do nothing else.

Does music annoy you, or do you just not like it?

It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I don't care about it,
I care about music the same way I care about commercials in the streets, it's part of my life but it's now an invisible part of my life.

I prefer listening to the nature or the world outside than to music but music doesn't annoy me unless I want to rest.

There's nothing abnormal about that. I don't blame you, 99.9999999999999% of music is complete and utter trash. I hate this stupid pop culture and all the music associated with it. I hate, hate, HATE chart music that plays on these really annoying stupid radio stations like Kiss fm and Heart fm which are hosted by dumb inbred chavs. We're constantly bombarded with trashy music playing from trashy radio stations, it's very hard to avoid music nowadays. Whether you're in a supermarket, a gym, your workplace, or even at home, you're always going to be exposed to music no matter where you are and you'll have to suffer and endure all the trashy music that surrounds us nowadays.

You certainly don't need to listen to music. Nobody does. It serves no other function other than to entertain. It can be nice to listen to some songs if you're bored or whatever.

I completely agree with you when you say that true freedom is to live without music. Unfortunately, I'm much too dependent on music personally, it's a problem I wish I didn't have, but I do love me tunes. The selection of music I listen to is extremely narrow, I think my whole music collection consists of just a couple hundred songs or so literally. But even though there's no variety and it's a really tiny selection of music, I'm pretty much always listening to it and have done so for many years, wish I can stop but I can't. It's very restraining to be this dependent on it. Being somewhat of an audiophile, perhaps I can put all the blame on my audio equipment, it certainly enhances the experience in a very huge way.

But I definitely agree with you when you say music isn't extraordinary. The lyrics are always meaningless, music doesn't ever carry any sort of message, it's just for entertainment purposes. Some people like to go out for walks, some people like to play sports, some people like to socialise with friends...and some people like to listen to music. But I have to say, I really really HATE all the mainstream music that I hear on tv/radio/internet these days, complete trash and extremely annoying, I wish it would stop.

There's various studies and research suggesting it helps improve brain functions, not just to entertain.

Equating all music to mainstream music just doesn't work

I have done electronic music production using software similar to fruity loops in the past but these days I mainly write lyrics and play guitar.

You're right. I think I'm still mentally scarred from my prolonged aural torture, I was subjected to all the mainstream trash for a few months at the gym I used to go to before I quit. It's unlikely I'll ever get over it. Kiss fm all day every day. It'll drive anyone mad.
I used to be a bit like that but now I am always plugged into music and can't live without it. Maybe you haven't found the right style of music. You are really missing out I my opinion because music can be so expressive and profound.
I couldn't live without music, as cliché as that is to say.

Played guitar for 11 years and write my own stuff. I am constantly on the lookout for new music I haven't heard before.

On the bus to work, at work, bus home from work, when I get home - always listening to music. There's something primal about listening to a piece of music which gives you goosebumps. I am sad you can't enjoy it, because it's one of life's true pleasures!
