Buying a TV for uni?

My parents have offered to buy me a TV for when I move into halls in September. I was looking at a fairly cheap 22" LED Samsung TV for about £110, which I thought was pretty good for the price! I watch TV some nights when I can't sleep, as it seems to help me drift off, and often use it to watch programs that I've downloaded etc.

I dunno. Is it a good idea or a bad idea? Will people keep trying to use my TV etc? What are people's experiences with taking their TV's?

Bad idea - you have to buy a TV licence and you are at uni to socialise and work - not watch TV. Besides you can always watch on demand. And - these uni rooms are usually teeny tiny so you will not have room for even a minuscule TV

I took a TV but I only used it for my Wii. No one even asked if they could use it or watch tv etc which was good because I would've said no. Also everyone had their own computer to watch stuff on.

Unless you video game you might as well just take a laptop for portability. Watch some tv while doing the cooking in the kitchen for example.
I had a TV with a licence and my xbox in each of the three years I was in halls, and whilst I was often the only one with a TV, people didn't ask if they could just use it. I did offer it whenever people wanted to watch a film or play FIFA/Forza, but it's your TV so you can generally keep yourself to yourself if that's what you want.

It's not cheap to have a TV licence, but it is nice having it on before bed rather than watching stuff from your laptop. That depends more on your financial situation.
Unless you game on the tv its pointless, most tv programs are on demand so a laptop would be more useful.

Yeah, I'm not the type of person that is constantly watching TV anyway, I more just have it on to relax to, and I'd be fine with some of my friends using it, but I just had the image of EVERYONE constantly using my TV - I'm a bit of a pushover :P. I just hate using my laptop to watch things, especially before bed as it seems to keep me awake. I do have my PS3 which I use occasionally at home too but I wasn't too sure on bringing this anyway.

I dunno I'll have to think about it!
You do not have to have a TV license unless you watch live tv/listen to live radio.

If you only watch things on demand (4oD, iPlayer), play games, or watch movies, you do NOT need to buy a TV license.

When you buy a fully functioning tv they ask you for your address and then tv license send you a letter if your address does not already hold one.

That only applies to internet use on laptops, ipad, mobile phones etc.

I've just quoted exactly what it says on the website.

You do not have to have a TV license if you do not watch or record (like how Sky records programmes for you) television programmes.

They can send you a letter, but you just have to ring them up and explain you do not watch live TV.

I know, you're correct. But the OP is saying that they will be using the TV most nights to fall sleep. So they will be watching tv shows as they're being broadcasted therefore they will need a license.

No it doesn't, just because you own a TV it does not mean you need a TV License. I had a 32" TV at uni, didn't need a license because I only used it for catchup and watching films off my PC, TV Licensing were aware of this because I emailed them and let them know so they'd stop sending me letters.

Does nobody read what the OP has said? I'm not gonna repeat myself after this. OP said they will use the TV to fall asleep, and will watch it as its broadcasting programmes. Therefore they need a licence.

You didn't need one because you didn't watch programmes while they were being broadcasted.

Yeah, I would be using it for live TV as well as catch up etc :/.

It might be better if I wait nearer to the time to see if I can afford to pay for my TV license. Unless my parents are willing to pay that is! Haha.
if you don't want to get a tv license then If you buy a HDMI or a VGA cable you could hook your laptop up to it, and say if you have netflix or whatever watch it on that instead? Or just use it for DVDs

Yeah that is a pretty good idea. I do that now but I suppose I wouldn't HAVE to get a TV licence and I could just do that all the time instead.
