Anyway, if its really bad as you say it, it was way beyond what was necessary. There was no need to beat him senseless or break his ribs (although I doubt this happened).
Try that somewhere people are allowed to carry guns, and you would be dead. Keep your stupidity in check.

But, When things like this happen, people react in different ways. Sometimes silly ways, and you can't control what you do, you just feel anger. But do not beat yourself up over it, it shows how much you care about her. I'm not saying it was slightly, but its forgivable!

Have you been to a court case? both sides will say anything to make themselves look right. thats why law is so complicated and judges and jury always have a tough time with them.

i thought according to British Law any kind of physical assault is a crime? can someone shed me some light i am not in the know.

And now hopefully he'll report you to the police and you'll get arrested and charged with assault or ABH.
What he did wasn't right, I'm not going to try and defend it for a second, but you could easily have gotten him to leave without getting violent, or you could have called the police and had them handle him for you. Either option would have resolved the situation.
Instead what you did was go completely over the top and react like a mindless thug. What he did wasn't right (although we don't know exactly what he did as you've only used a very general term), but in no way does it justify the level of violence that you reacted with.
Also, I just spoke to a close friend of mine who graduated a couple of years ago and is now working as a lawyer who said that if he chooses to go to the police and press charges, even if there is evidence of him having assaulted your friend, you will still be charged, and even if it is your first offence, if you have caused as much damage to him as you seem to think you have then there is a very good chance that it will end with you being given a short jail sentence.

Many, and yeah I understand but if you have a guy who has been beaten senseless with his jaw broken and rubs broken then it's not exactly an accident.
Obviously you can pull a few things but let's be honest even then I don't see how he would get off with not punishment, but if you have a good enough lawyer, I agree it is very possible

Yup, defences rebut or mitigate the criminal assault/battery/ABH/GBH. They will not kill a case from the get-go. There are nuanced situations such as everyday contact and contact sport which just aren't criminal assault but this isn't one of those.
