What the heck does this mean?

I was just reading this article on the BBC:

This year the Student Loans Company will process more than a million loan applications, including, for the first time, those for Welsh students.
I don't get it? :confused: How were they processed before for Welsh students?

It was called Student Finance England for a reason...

although I don't actually know how welsh students received their funding previously they must have had their own company like Scotland.

Until this academic year, Welsh student finance was managed by Local Authorities. This was the case in England until everyone was transferred over to the SLC in phases a few years ago. Wales is just coming into line with England by centralising student finance processing and taking it away from individual local authorities.

You still apply via the Student Finance Wales website, but the backroom processing is now done centrally by the SLC.
