Questions about maintenance grant and student accounts...

I can't remember whether or not I applied for a maintenance grant. Do you have to apply manually when you're applying for student finance, or are you considered automatically? The post I got in the mail from SFE said nothing about maintenance grants.

Also, can someone explain student accounts for me, e.g. interest free overdraft? What do people use them for? And when do you have to pay them off?

For the maintenance grant, you tick a box on the application to be income-assessed and your grant entitlement is based on that. If you didn't tick the box, you'll only get the maintenance loan.

If you think that's what happened, ring SF and explain - they can update your application and get the income-assessment process underway.
