Are the private school kids even clever?

I was thinking...

I went to a grammar school in Kent. In sixthform, there was a girl who came into our sixthform from a local comprehensive. This was someone who didn't pass her 11+, got mainly Bs and Cs at GCSE.

She failed year 12 in our Grammar School (got 2Es and 2Us) and her parents moved her to a private school. There she flourished and got AAB at A-level and got into Southampton to study English Lit.

So she wasn't even clever enough to pass her 11+, but due to private school teaching managed to gain great grades and go to a very good Uni.

Can even very dumb people succeed in private schools?

Some are. If someone at a ****ty state school gets the same grades as someone at a good private school though the person at state school is probably harder working/more intelligent.
tbh Southampton is not all that good. But yes, in general the most talented teachers work at private schools; the environment is pleasant for pupils and teachers.

Really, I thought Southampton was a good Uni? Would you rank it above places like Manchester/Newcastle?
Private school kids aren't smarter, but the school provides a better learning environment, hence they get better grades in general.

i am not a ranker.

just pointing out that she did not go to a top of the range University.
I wouldn't necessarily say that is correct, there are many people at my school that are complete idiots and it is amazing how they even got in. You have got to take into account many people who are at private schools get in because the school has to take a certain amount of people in every year that aren't at 'the top of the bunch'.

So no, many people at private schools are much dumber than those at state schools.
Failing was probably her incentive to work hard and achieve the grades she did. Going up 5 grades isn't due to the quality of the teaching.

The private school environment can be markedly different to the state sector, and as such can suit some people much better. Whatever it was that wasnt working for in the state school clearly wasnt present in her private school, or something in the private school she had not previously had inspired her.

"very dumb people"...really? your post proves that there are no such thing as dumb people, just environments that suit them and those that dont.
Nah

But they have some top quality teachers. Back at my state school, some of the teachers have been sacked for being awful and others are just plain average
You want to know the secret of why the most affluent private kids get excellent grades?

They pay smarter kids to sit their exams - seen it happen so many times...

OMG do you honestly believe that? Do you have proof or is this just 'people say' ?

Why cant you just accept that longer days in small classes with specialist teachers, lots of prep, and students who are engaged in the process gets better results?

(perhaps not all students are wildly enthusiastic but there is a very very very tiny percentage of students in private schools who spend their time messing about and dossing off, parents just dont pay up to £40k a year for that)

Yes I have proof. And no I don't base myself from hearsay unlike you perhaps.

I was even approached to sit exams for others-which I didn't end up doing.

Wow, check you out. I never went to a private school and I did fine academically.

Lol who are trying to convince me or yourself? Why don't you go run off to daddy to bail you out to get 'more engaged' rofl. Spoilt rich kid.:facepalm2:

The environment and even peer influence can go a long way.

Its impossible to get quiet revision done at my state grammar since there are so many rowdy people around with not many free rooms. It was even quieter at KFC than the sixth form 'study area' >.<

Not sure what 'I dont base myself from hearsay' means as the grammar is so poor, but if you are trying to say that you only quote things for which you have proof then we are alike in that regard.

I didnt say that those in state education cannot achieve academically, congratulations for doing 'fine' by the way. The subject of this thread is that someone who was unable to achieve her potential at that type of institution did better in a private school, and I was pointing out the factors that will likely have contributed thereto.

I am neither spoilt nor rich, and FYI my father, who was also not rich, died when I was a small child so much as I would love to run to him, that is regrettably not possible.

Absolute rubbish. Its because many private schools are very selective, so they only let smart people in. How could they pay other people to sit their exams? Pupils who didn't pay people to sit their exams would probably notice if a load of Oxford students came into their A-Level exam hall.

At least private schools don't have stabbings every week...
I went to a public school for twelve years in the UK and then I moved country and went to Private British schools when I lived abroad (in Qatar and now in Dubai). I got into all three in different ways- the first one I can't remember doing any thing for, the second one I had to do a basic test (things like maths and English) and then for the third school I was going into sixth form so I only had to do an interview (my little brother who is three years younger than I did tests for the second and third school we went to).

I wouldn't say that I'm a perfect student, my grades can fluctuate; although recently I've been getting no less than a C. As definitely became more possible for me once I got into private school although my average seems to be a B.

The most noticeable difference I found with public school and private school (although this is just personal experience) is the drive and motivation. Of course my public high school tried to motivate us, sometimes it didn't feel genuine. In my private schools, I've always felt like the drive is not just I'm the teachers but in the students as well. I've wondered why that is. I seemed to be the only one wanting good grades in my high school in the UK but once I moved out it was very clear that everyone wanted to do their best (of course I know that's not the case for everyone, just my experience!)

If there is any sincerity in your last paragraph, then I apologise - as insulting you was not my intention.
