America "leader of the free world" - Arming America's Police

I still don't quite understand why we are allied with such people.

This is one reason why. America's police force is increasingly militarised, with special forces being used as response for things as petty as underage drinking, low level drug use (cannabis) and general street patrols. Does this not worry anybody? How can anyone argue the USA is a liberal country that leads the free world, when things such as this are occurring daily?

Equipment, weapons and vehicles used for both conventional and unconventional warfare, like what was seen in Iraq and Afghanistan is being used as normal everyday use on the USA's streets. Things like Infantry fighting vehicles, and armoured personnel carriers. Does this not worry people? Is it necessary to have armoured anti mine vehicles patrolling on the quiet streets in a small town in Tennessee? I don't think people hate the USA government enough to start engaging their agent with small arms on the streets, and setting IED's down on the roadside.
