I've not yet seen a trend on this. Would be extremely helpful if anyone could offer some help on how to tackle these exams. I'm really worried about how its going to go especially the Culture and Identity as well as the research method section. Education is probably my strongest point. Any advice and sharing of how you've done in either of these exams would be great.

There are so many sociologists to remember its literally driving me INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my god me too! I've been focusing on my psyc exams way more than soc. I'm doing families and households. Education topic is soo long

Yeah most of my friends who are doing psyc are worrying about that the most, sounds like there is such an awful lot to remember, its on Tuesday right?

Methods in Context is by far the worse, i cant get the grasps with it. As for education, I have an amazing teacher. Let me know if you need any help specific sections.

I'm currently trying to practice essays. Whats families and households like? It sounds a lot better!

Yep it's on tuesday.. only 2 days left T__T Yeah methods in context. I need to time myself and do practice papers.

By the way my teacher said that you can get an A without mentioning any sociologist's name and instead write "research has shown" ... "a sociologist found..". She said one of her students swore that he didn't use any names and still got an A. One of my friends got a C in her mock without mentioning any either. Though I'm not 100% sure about it all

The only topics we're doing is identity & culture & family as sociology was an elective so we didn't have time to do all the topics, I've not done much revision for it, been prioritising philosophy :/

Wow philosophy! I'm interested in studying that.. if only they did that course at my school. I guess sociologys that one subject no one's really bothered about lol

I am really worried too, sociology is my strongest subject but because I've been concentrating all my revision on psychology I'm worried I won't do as well in sociology as I should.

As for the sociologists names, my teacher told us its more important to know what was said not who said it so if you say 'a sociologist said' instead of 'Oakley said' for example, you will only be able to get 18/20 in the essay but its better than guessing the wrong person! I'm trying to learn the ones that have said a lot that I will be able to relate to most questions and leaving the smaller, less memorable people :smile:

You could always try and write names on flash cards and try and learn them that way!

What are your predictions for the family and household topic? Anyone? My teacher says demography could come up for the long question. She usually gets the predictions right but no one can really tell for sure.

I'm doing families and households on the 15th and education on the 21st, anyone have any thoughts on what the essay questions could be? Or any useful revision tips for education? It's just not sticking in!

My sociology teacher failed to mention that in research methods questions you need to refer to theorists that use the methods in the question, so I would recommend doing that as you will be capped at 15 marks for 20 mark questions. Also, keep a close eye on the time as you don't want to miss out on high markers.
The best advice I have been given for these exams is to follow the PEEEL structure...
P- The point you are making in the form of a theorist
E- Explain what this sociologist said/ did
E- Give a real life example, so for labelling you might say 'white middle- class are labelled as pro- school'
E- Evaluate this theorist with another theorist
L- link back to question
Really easy way of getting a few extra marks and not missing out points, hope this helps :smile:

I honestly hadn't even considered this as a long answer question for some reason. I'm hoping it will be on social policy although I doubt it will be :frown:

Same! It's been that subject I've left aside for a year which wasn't he wises decision but I've still been relatively strong at it throughout but I'm just at tht point where I'm panicking! Thank you for the tip will be doing so, good luck to you too!!!! Hope we do well.

That's such a good idea on how to include points and evaluation marks are what get you at the top bands too thank you so much! Will be considering that and try it out on some practice questions :smile:

Right is anyone aware on whether you have to include theoretical factors (in terms of using positivist etc) when doing the method in context questions. I don't think you do but just need a little reassurance..

It's not essential as you can't really link them into the question but if you do unstructured interviews for example and write that they make data valid etc you can put interpretivists like them just as an added point and mention positivists when stating disadvantages. I don't think it gets any extra marks but I think it's worth doing :smile:

im doing these exams on the youth culture unit. for thursday's exam try to learn the same sociologists that you can apply to different questions. however for question three on the age topic im really stuck on getting three sociologists for each agent on socialisation does anyone have any ideas? i have victor and mckingsley for family but need one more :frown:
