You just have to read up on them, maybe ask around ppl you know find out if anyone has any vac scheme experience etc. VArious databases of firms and websites people will put up (i cant be bothereD) will tell you what each firm specialises in and then give you the run down on them, trainees opinions ... look on their websites and at the end of the day you need primary experience of hte people to decide if you like them.

You should also try visiting some firms and speaking directly to current trainees. The websites and brochures of all firms are going to seem amazing and glossy so you may want to get a real feel of the firm by visiting it.
Yea but if you just ring them up and say "can i come in and speak to your trainees" are they likely to agree? I aint doubting you but I just dont know, best plan is to meet them on campus surely at one of their presentations!

I thought Law firms have open days, where you can visit the firm and speak to partners/ trainees
Yea they do, but are you really going to travel from all over the place to attend an open day in london ... its fair enough if you live there! Personally I would just wait for them to come to campus, but I do live 360 miles from london.

Oh yeah the travelling issue is understandable! I live in London so it wouldn't be much of a prob for me.
The people that often represent firms are current trainees or recently qualified solicitors so its very helpful to spend sometime talking to them.

Even if a particular firm that you are interested in are going to be at an open-day at a university closer to you, then you may be able to go again as some universities have open-access policies.

I've just done some general research over the past year or so to find which firms I like. Try the Legal 500, the Lex etc. xxx.
University of Sheffield hold a big law fair every December, with loads and loads of firms from MC firms to local high street Sheffield firms. I'm sure other universities in different areas would hold something similar too, but from firsthand experience, the Sheffield one is great if you can make it

I spent hours here chatting to trainees, etc., and this really helped me decide on the firms I wanted to find out more about / definately apply to
Nottingham one is biggest in the country, supposedly.
I think there's a list of law fairs on www.lawcareers.net
