Arthur Birling is a middle upperclass businessman ,who is a social climber, he doesn't take much interest whether his daughter his finding someone she loves as the marriage will serve him as a business contract between the crofts (Gerald's parents). This is shown by a number of ways

1. his own marriage is not at smooth as it seems as his wife does not respect him.
2. his son got a woman pregnant, stole money from him, is a drunk and whom didn't feel he could confide in "You're not the kind of father a chap could go to when he's in trouble"- Eric
3. the man that he thinks is just right for his daughter has already cheated on her.

The political aspect, shows Arthur Birling to be greedy and selfish in treating his staff "it is my job to cut costs" Arthur, his greed is shown even more shockingly to the audience as he is more angry about his son stealing money than him getting a woman pregnant without being in a relationship or having the means to look after it.
