HOW IS PROTECTION SHOWN IN PRAISE SONG AND NETTLES?

They are both familial relationships which show a sense of protection and love presented in the past to show remembrance.

In Praise song for my mother it is a daughter speaking of what the mother previously did for her which is shown through metaphors. ‘Flame trees spread to me’. This suggested that the mother is like a fire. She is bright and warming for the daughter but also spreading as wherever the daughter goes she will always be protected. This may link with ‘sunrise to me’, metaphorically linking to the mother being protective and also looking over her and shining up the day. The reader may believe this mother has passed away as she is referring to her in the past tense as if she’s not there anymore however other may see her just expressing her emotions as she may not live with her anymore. This links with the structure change on the bottom. It’s split apart from the rest of the poem.’ Go to your wide futures, you said’. This suggests the physically parting of the poem metaphorically demonstrates her doing what he mother says. It’s going from the past then braking to this future. This may have been the writer’s intension to show her progressing on with her life without her mother. The technique of repetition is also used ‘replenishing replenishing’. This shows the sense of the mother rebuilding and picking the daughter back up however others may say that she needs her mother to give her security.
