Arsey's S2 Edexcel revision and resources thread

I'm not fan of Stats but I thought I had better finally go through this module. It wasn't as painful as I expected certainly more interesting than S1.

Anyway here are some resources that you might find useful.

I don't know what is going on with the word .doc files. If you download one of these and a load of random symbols appear, download again and open again, it should work (this is what is happening to me) - I have no idea why!

One top tip - Remember about the continuity correction if approximating Poisson or Binomial with a Normal distribution!

Very common error in the exam
Thank you very much Arsey :smile:

Definitions to learn

Arsey,

These are the only definitions we need to know?

You could also be asked any definition from S1.

Use Binomial when:

A fixed number of trials;
Each trial is a success or failure;
Results of trials are independent of one another;
Probability of success is constant;

n trials, prob of success = p x ~ B(n,p)

P(X=x) nCx p^n (1-p)^(n-x)

Mean = np
Variance = np(1-p)

So glad that I do mechanics. :u:
Stats seems like festering crap that hasn't been picked up yet.

Use Poisson when:

Events occur singularly;
Events are independent from one another;
Events occur at a constant rate;

Approximate Binomial with Poission when n is large and p is small np<=10

Approximate Binomial with Normal when n is large and p is close to 0.5 np>10

Approximate Poisson with Normal when rate is large (>10)

If approximating with Normal don't forget CONTINUITY CORRECTION

What definitions could you be asked for S1?Do you have any advice for M2 all my Further Maths class find it extremely difficult often its just getting our heads around the problems when a reaction force is perpendicular or on an angle and there are also loads of calculations and many other ways to slip up leaving u as u when its usinx I wish they would stop labeling it as u at an angle because it can confuse me especially when you have to consider vertical and horizontal motion and you get something like ucosx=6/t and rearrange to give t=6/ucosx but then substitute into s=ut+1/2at^2 but the u here should be usinx.

S1 is comfortably easier than M1
S2 is massively easier than M2 and has much less content.

well it is unlikely but they could ask the definition of an event, statistical experiment etc

I think with M1 and M2 learning the content is tricky but once you start hammering the past papers it should get much easier as the questions are relatively static

I always split projectiles up into H and V and use SUVAT, I would only mess with conservation of energy if forced into it.

Do you want me to do a similar thread for M2?
