The Student Room Group

All History students please!

Hey,

I have a number of History documents that i wish to categorise in a format so that university students could browse them and quickly locate a document they needed.
The subcategory system i have at present is seen below - can anybody give me any additions/amendments to this?

The category is called History & Philisophical Studies,

Ancient History
Classical history, c.C7th BC to c.C1st AD
Byzantine History
c.C1st AD to c.C7th AD
Medieval History
c. 700 AD to c.1550 AD
Modern History
c.1550 to the present
1500-1599
1600-1699
1700-1799
1800-1899
1900-1919
1920-1949
1950-1999
2000-2099

It seems a bit odd to have the Byzantine period in there, but each to their own.

Personally I'd use the following system (which is a more standard version):

Ancient history
c. 7 BC-400 AD

Medieval history
Early medieval period - c. 400 AD-1000
Central medieval period - 1000-1250
Late medieval period - 1250-1500

Early modern history
1500-1800

Modern history
1800-present

These should only be used as rough guides, though; each boundary is to some degree arbitary.

I agree with Kew. Perhaps Modern History could be from 1789 onwards.
I seem to recall posting this before but I will do so again nonetheless. It is very difficult to categorise what is 'modern history' as convention accepts it begins with the renaissance, however, the renaissance occurred at different times in different countries hence the reference as early modern history, given the span that modern history covers. Generally it stops being called early modern and switches to modern history with the French Revolution in 1789.
