What type of work/projects would you like to be doing as a professional engineer in the future after graduating?

I think you may be choosing the wrong reasons to go into engineering let alone any career.

It will be difficult to get employed if you cannot display a real interest in that field.

Haha, he'll be at an interview and they'll ask him

So why are you interested in a career in Engineering?

Well because I want a job that is high pay

The best is the one which gets you into the career you want to be in.

There is a large amount of flexibility between the mechanically oriented degrees (mechanical, aero, motorsport, automotive, etc). It is possible to work in aerospace with a mechanical degree and vice versa. Generally employers are quite flexible and many just ask for "an appropriate degree" when applying for graduate jobs because there are many topics shared between them.

You really need to consider where you want to end up though. Consider your 5, 10 and 15 year plan. Which companies do you want to work for, what work do you want to be performing for that company? There are hundreds of fields of work in engineering.

Thanks..you have been helpful
Mechanical Engineering is often seen as the "broadest" of the engineering disciplines, which may be the best option if you are unsure. It covers things from many of the other courses and you can choose more specialised subjects in third and fourth year. To be honest, the first two years of engineering courses are often fairly similar, as they want you to have a decent background knowledge before going into specifics.

In Mech Eng you get to use the student workshop which is my favourite part- basically playing with lathes! I can't comment on the practical aspects of other courses but the Student workshop is for Mech Eng only.

Do either Mechanical (if you're unsure), computer science (if you like programming or want to learn how to programme or write programmes) or electrical (because that is in high demand in the UK with the railway infrastructure). There is also quite a lot of demand for civil engineerings but not as much as the ones I mentioned before. Avoid Aerospace - I know from experience.
