Why is our science teacher making us do a preliminary?

I've looked on mark schemes and tips for science coursework and non of them talk about preliminaries. They go straight from the hypothesis to the method so why is my science teacher making us do a preliminary and talking about it in the writing?

ive retread the mark scheme and it makes more sense now.

What coursework is this, and are you sure you'er reading the mark scheme correctly?

Preliminaries are always useful because they make your main method better and more focused. Even if it's not explicitly in the mark scheme, doing a preliminary is useful and good practice.
