Millennium Development Goals- Hoping of Queen Elizabeth II will support behind

United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II plans to address UN General Assembly

Original Post by UN News Centre

25 January 2010 Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Ali Treki today welcomed the announcement from Buckingham Palace that Queen Elizabeth II will visit United Nations Headquarters in New York in July.

The British monarch is slated to address the 192-member General Assembly on 6 July for the first time in over 50 years.

The spokesperson for the Secretary-General said that Mr. Ban “looks forward to receiving Her Majesty personally on this historic occasion,” in a statement issued today.

The head of State of the United Kingdom and 15 other UN Member States, the Queen has addressed the General Assembly only once before, in 1957.

“The President of the General Assembly is very happy for this visit,” his spokesperson Jean-Victor Nkolo told the UN News Centre, noting that the confirmation comes on the heels of Mr. Treki’s own trip last week to London, when he met with the UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs David Miliband and its Minister for Europe Baroness Kinnock.

“The President of the General Assembly hopes the Queen will throw her weight and support behind the MDGs [Millennium Development Goals] and other important issues on the agenda of the General Assembly,” said Mr. Nkolo.

What do you think? Will she help? Do you agree that Queen Elizabeth will support behind the MDGs as she told?

Iceland is skeptical of the Queen's involvement and wonders if there are ulterior motives for her getting involved. However, it commends her for offering assistance and it is sure her speech will be wonderfully written by an advisor.
Madagascar is a little confused that according to the article, this already happened in 2010 and is not new now? Do we know if in fact the Queen of the UK has done anything substantial towards the millennium goals within the past 4 years? Madagascar commends her for ideas, however often these sorts of speeches are just motivational talk and little concrete good comes from them.

It did occur on 2010.
But it is an on going discussion which is still taking place.
It is still going till 2015.

"“Around the world, you are working with us to foster development, advance human rights, and promote global security,” he said. “In September, we will gather to advance this mission further still by pushing for progress towards the Millennium Development Goals,” he added, referring to the high-level summit he will convene in New York to advance progress on the MDGs."

Botswana feels this is just a publicity stunt to try and bring relevance to the British Monarch.

OOC: I don't think the words of a powerless 88 year old queen can bring any more motivation to this cause.

But as a queen she could help with supporting with her royal properties.
There's nothing to do with age.

Exactly, so you got my point.
Israel would like to thank the Queen for taking the time out of her busy week and come to address us all. Israel would also like to thank the British people for granting us our GOD GIVEN LANDS.
