Hello, my name is Jessica and I need some advice desperately.

I am interested in studying Diagnostic Radiography at University in 2015 and have been looking at different universities but I am really drawn to Portsmouth.

I have tried my very hardest to get some sort of work experience or even a day within the radiography department. I have tried my local hospital which have not even bothered to get back to me, and I have even tried hospitals in London but they give priority to people within their area. I have now requested to do volunteering in my local hospital and they are sending my all the forms woppppay!

All I ask is that if any person has got into university without experience in Radiogrpahy and more of the clinical side of experience such as volunteering in a hospital? Would volunteering be enough to get into uni? I am really stressing here!

Thankyou xxxxx

My A Levels ended up a bit odd.
For 2 years I did Biology, Maths and Religious Studies, I got a DDU (U in Maths) and I had an E in AS maths, I had offers for radiolography but obviously I didn't get in.

I then moved to a different college for a extra year where I resat A2 Biology and A2 Religious Studies and took up a Double Award AS level in Health and Social Care and I got CD at A2 and AB in the double award AS. The double award AS was the equivalent of an A2 in UCAS points and I got into uni.

I went to University of Cumbria, Lancaster campus.

Keep trying. Contact the universities that you want to apply to and see if they can advise. SHU accept a 'clinical open day' that are run by a couple of local hospitals and are relatively easy to book onto (inasmuch as if they have a space they will give you one). You could also try private hospitals, I know someone who got a day at a Nuffield hospital. I couldn't get anything where I live so I had to travel but it was worth it. I do know someone who was given an offer before she had done any work experience, but she had it arranged but a lot of universities insist you do it before interview.

It had it's ups and downs really. The work is more a bit more difficult than A Level work but it is different as it is all focused on radiology at the end of it and there is a huge practical aspect to the course which really helps you understand the theory. I also found the work more interesting than A Level which helped me be more self motivated which is needed at degree level.

The work load is the hardest part, finding a balance between placement, writing an essay or your dissertation, revising and having a life outside of uni was tough. Placement can be really tough on people and some people did leave when they couldn't handle placement, it can be long days in a stressful and busy environment for weeks at a time. It does make it difficult to do anything else as you are so tired in the evenings and weekends and you mostly likely have uni work to do.

What a level/level3 BTEC did you do
Just about to start my second year in a couple weeks, posting for the sake of finding the thread easily.
Most important thing is to ensure you have at least one day in clinical before the course - phone local hospitals well in advance.

Subscribing. I've been a radiographer for a couple of years now, had 'senior' prefixed to my job title earlier this year. Also happy to answer questions about the course, but perhaps more relevantly the job and the 'real world' in general.

What areas can you specialise in?

Specific modalities: x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, interventional radiography, cardiac cath lab

Complementary modalities are often linked e.g. CT and MRI (cross-sectional) or interventional and cath lab (angiography).

Specialist centres will rotate you through more modalities with specialist exams. Small general hospitals will let you rotate too but larger ones may want you to stick to one or two modalities full time. Depends on service needs.

Or you can go into reporting, management, teaching, radiation protection, or if you fancied something different, sales and apps training.

And if you want to earn lots of money with zero politics, there's agency work.

I did A-levels in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry.
Hi everyone, I'll be applying to do Radiography in 2015.

I think at Liverpool, Leeds, UWE, Cardiff, and either Portsmouth or Exeter. I'll be a mature student technically (I'm 22, not that old I promise) because I've already done one degree.
