Nobody sticks with one language, they use whichever is the best fit for the task at hand. There also really isn't a 'better' - it's like saying English is a better language than Spanish. Do you want a more widely used language (there aren't may), or a simpler one (a scripting language), or a completely different type (functional or declarative etc.)

Java is nice, relatively fast and has great documentation so isn't too hard to learn, but static typing can make things unnecessarily complicated for a beginner (though on the flip side it can also save you from stupid mistakes.) If you're a complete beginner, it might be hard working out how and what to compile, or figuring out your way round an IDE if you don't use a text editor to code. For this reason alone I always recommend Codecademy because it allows you to learn Python for free online, and not worry about interpreting or setting anything up. One you understand the basics (data types, control flow, loops, functions, maybe objects) then have a go at Java and you'll find it a lot easier than you would have initially.
