I think it depends which bit of drug research you want to do. Doctors mostly just deliver the clinical trials bit at the end, whereas drug development is something which lives in the hands of Chemists, Chemical Engineers, Pharmacists and so on. To my understanding. To get into the actual research bit and coming up with new drugs, it's more the pharmaceutical industry than medicine.
