Muhammad Ali probably isn't the greatest boxer ever but he is IMO the greatest sportsman ever because of his story.

yeah I was thinking more athlete but I'm not sure how much the differs between sportsman. Guess it's open to interpretation.

My top 3 in no particular order:

Roger Federer- 17 majors, 302 weeks at no 1 with 237 consecutive weeks, 34 consecutive major QFs and 23 consecutive SFs, 18 out of 19 slam finals from 2005 to 2010. So many more records that I can go on forever. A true legend.

Pele- Over a 1000 goals and helped Brazil win 2 world cups.

Surprised Woods hasn't got a vote. Despite all the controversy surrounding his private life, he'd easily make my top three. Muhammad Ali and Federer would be the others.
Michael Schumacher, Roger Federrer, Sachin Tendulkar and maybe in a few years Messi as well

Usain Bolt for me. He managed to dominate his field in a way that no other athlete has ever been able to do, in such a mesmeric and unbelievable fashion. A bit like federer winning 11 grand slams between 2003 and 2007.
Ali, Bolt, Garrincha.
Sportsman Ali, no one else had such a profound impact through sport.

Pure athlete I'm tempted by Bo Knows too.
