That's a good point actually. Maybe I'll just be a ninja and steal some water from the kettle while everyone else is arguing over who can use it. :P

That is a good idea. Ahaaa.

It just seems so far away, ahaha. Yeah, not the best day to apply, hopefully it'll be earlier in may.

Are you allowed mini fridges in the accomodation? I do want a kettle though, it will be nice to have a cup of tea whenever I want.

I am in the Lawns this year and about 5 of my flat-mates have mini-fridges in their rooms. It says that you are not supposed to have them but the cleaners, who come to clean your room once a week, have no problems and only report damages etc. Also when people are coming in drunk at 3am and stealing your food from the kitchen then it seems like an even better idea to have a mini-fridge in your room. You can easily have a kettle in your room, i do myself, and there are 6 plugs in your room.

Hi, after much deliberation and what I thought was a really excellent applicant day I have firmed Hull.
I just wonder where your info comes from re students with food allergies getting preference at Nicholson? I know that neither Thwaite nor Needler can cater for some allergies but I also know that the Lawns can. I do have a food allergy so I am just checking the possibilities.
I am thinking of student houses, partly for the self catering thing (I know Nicholson is massively over subscribed generally) and partly because I would prefer to be nearer the university.

Anyone else applying for student houses?

To be honest mate the lawns is the best place to live. If you buy a year-long bus pass which was £215 this year then you just jump on the bus in the lawns car park and it takes you right to uni. It is only a 15 minute journey, if that long, and the buses come every 20 mins. As for the food, Nicholson give preference to people with allergies as it is the only hall which is self-catered. The food at the lawns is actually very good despite what you might expect. There are usually 3 or 4 main foods e.g. your meats etc, then you move onto the next station and help yourself to veg and chips. You move to the salad bar next which has a wide choice then get your desert. There is another bar if you want a jacket potato or baguette instead of the main dishes. Honestly you would be hard pushed to find something you do not like.

Oh and for those wondering which hall to apply to at the lawns, Lambert, which i am in, is the closest to the bus stop and canteen  Plus it was refurbished last year so it looks the nicest as well. I urge you not to choose ferens, it may look the nicest from the outside but inside it is a prison.

If either of you have any other questions then feel free to message me

Is the bus pass easy to get a hold of? Just because I know I really want one.

Lambert's my first choice for next year. purely because it's next to the bus stop. XD

Yeah it is really easy, when you first get to the lawns, think it was around the 24th September last year, there are a bunch of things going on in the lawns centre including representatives from the Bus Service. You just go to their stall and pay by card and they give you a slip so you can use the bus for free whilst your card it been made. Then after about a week you can pick up the card from the student union in uni.
Does anybody have any photos of inside any of the lawns halls? (or would be able to post a link to some?)

Great, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for it this year. I can't wait to move in now. ^_^

That would be good. The accommodation website is really not helpful! Which halls are you staying in?

I am in Lambert Hall, block D which includes en-suite in all rooms.

These are pictures of my room which as you can see is pretty large. All rooms come with a bed (obviously ), large desk, shelf, double wardrobe, bedside cabinet, 6 plug sockets, radiator, power shower (in en-suite rooms).

(PS3 is obviously much more important than uni work  )

As for the kitchen, it is great. There is one on each floor, 3 floors, and they are for 7/8 people. There are two fridge/freezers, two cookers, microwave, kettle and about 12 cupboards so 2 for most people. The toaster is not provided unfortunately but if everyone chips in a couple of quid you can buy one easily enough.

Thanks! The rooms look a lot nicer than some of the ones I have seen/stayed in! And of course the ps3 is more important than uni work, although I'm more of an xbox fan... The kitchen does look quite nice (and weirdly clean?!) When I stayed with some uni friends you had to physically climb over dirty pots to reach the sink...
Cheers for the photos mate.

Haha yeah it can get a bit messy but i am a bit of a clean freak myself. The cleaners come and clean the kitchen daily (mon-fri) so it doesn't get too messy but on sunday night it can look like a bombs hit it!!

The cleaners also clean your room once a week (hover floor, empty bin, clean shower/toilet etc).

That makes two of us, although I think i'm borderline OCD (I once trekked to asda just to buy bleach and 'shake n vac') haha. It's good that the cleaners are in every day though, at least if people just do their bit then it won't get too out of hand!
I`m so excited i`m going to hull this year but im a little confused about accomodation. I was looking at the uni houses which are a 42 week let and nicolson hall which is 34 weeks. I was just wondering if anyone had any experience of student houses and could tell me about what the difference is between a 34 week let and 42 week (:

Heya! I applied to Hull this year for Politics and IR, and I might be going for a house as well.
ah cool! I just think they look nicer than the lawns but most people I speak to are going to the lawns so im a tad nervous that you dont get to know people aswell in a house!

I have a friend who is in her first year at hull, she said that houses look tempting but she highly recommends halls, purely for the socialising.
http://www2.hull.ac.uk/student/hullaccommodation/howtoapply.aspx This has appeared on the website. Looks like we can apply online soon

Just wanted to say that every single room at the lawns is exactly the same as this.
if they dont have an en suite it's the same room but with a sink+cupboard+mirror where the door would be.(where the wardrobe is tends to vary)
and some of the older blocks only have 2 sockets so i would advise bringing a multiplug just in case

42 week means you can stay over christmas too, and you wont have to move out until later in the summer, whereas the 34 week you cant stay at christmas and the contract finishes as soon as exams do.

my friend went in a house this year
she's the only first year but she still socialises with them all.
just because they're not in your year doesnt mean they wont be lovely (everyone is)
and because the student houses are so close to uni (so close they might as well be on campus) you can still go and meet everyone at all the events

and the accommodaion people try and get similar people into the same house, so odds are, you'll get put with first years doing a similar course to you!
