    Another college choosing thread
    Hey all,

I've got an offer to do a PhD at Durham and I have to pick a college to join. I've been looking at their websites and some of the threads here, but I find it hard to make a choice.

I'm going to be living outside the college in my own place so the quality of the accomodation doesn't matter to me. What I'm looking for is a college that's got a good social atmosphere and where the postgrads can form a part of college life.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

If you're living outside college you don't want one up the hill -don't pick Aidan's, it's right on the very top! I'd go for a central one, try St Cuthbert's Society, which has a high proportion of live-outers and postgrads.

Choose Cuths!!! It's very friendly, and welcoming to all. It's great! There's lots of post grads, and people from all ages and walks of life, and lots of livers out.

Have you tried looking at the college MCR pages? They might give you some idea of graduate life and involvement in college life. However if you're not going to be living in then St Cuths does seem like the best idea because it caters for many undergraduates who do the same.

Edited because free drinks at 18ths is not necessarily a good idea in terms of coherence the next morning...

yeah, you definately want a central one (on bailey street).. i dont know about the postgrad situation in hatfield, but thats where i applied (and hope to go in sept) and can honestly say that from the minute i got there to the minute i left, i felt completely at home.. i can definately see where the phrase - "if theres something going on in the university, a hatfielder is behind it" comes from.. (and if you do look at any other comments, ignore ones about rahs (rich arses..) its a general misconception throughout the uni.. good luck with choosing!
