I don't know about all of the courses, but sharing a joint first year with the Aston Marketing course I say it, so far, gives you an excellent grounding in business and the marketing lectures are well taught and thought out and a continual improvment process is taking place.

The place is also fantastic imo.

It depends what you mean by 'best'. They are all very good business schools.

In terms of rankings for Business and Management, Manchester is highest.

Going to any of them would be a good choice.

Visit them all and see which one you like the feel of most

Ok cheers, well does anyone know which one has the least maths? as it very hard to tell what the course involve when reading the prospectus..however manchester requires gcse maths at A for this course and i only have B? i have posted this many times b4 but no-one has replied :frown: it also says you need english A at gcse and i only got B :frown: but have got an A at english AS so? But why does that course have such high entry requirements! i think even accounting at manchester is easier to get in :frown:

ID ignore the GCSE grades if you have higher results in AS levels, thats the lowest requirement. normally.

Aston first year does involve a bit of maths, im not on the marketing course myself, so im not positive entirely what modules you would get but Aston does like its students to have a bit of grounding in all areas. As far as I know, this extends to marketing.

Although I think you would be wise to check. If you ring up the university im sure they'd tell you all about it. Details may also be found on the Business school website: www.abs.aston.ac.uk

Manchester is highest who says?

Nottingham is the highest ranked business school out of all of them.

I think Manc/Lanc/Notts sort of alternate in the ranking every year, but they are always top 20, n'est-ce pas?

Ok cheers so i can ignore the english...but what about the maths?! I got a B and that was the highest i could have got on the paper and am not taking maths a level :frown:..its weird coz some of the accounting and finance degrees dont even need maths!

Is Lancs not considered a red brick? Do employers/anyone think less of it for it?

I now learn that its the only 1 with a placement year
Reply 10
Lancaster can't be a red brick because it was built in the 1960s not Victorian times. I'd place in order of reputation Nottingham first then Manchester, Lancaster, Aston. Nottingham has loads of the top recruiters there, if you want to work for a plc. I think your B in English and Maths will be fine. They got me into Durham for Business.

Alright cheers mate so i would be looking at notts and manchester. Its just the placement year thats got me thinking lancaster should be my first choice. Ive been reading about graduates from lancaster going straight into good jobs at deloitte and being trained in Amsterdam. All the good stories are people who all seem to have firsts though.

I dont know whether i want to wokr for a plc or not :frown: do iii ?? Where is the money?! lol

Aston also has a placement and has some very good marketing lecturers. As a business school, there are few with a better reputation amongst employers.

As a city Birmingham is up there with the best but then that could also be argued about Manchester and Nottingham.

I strongly reccomend you visit each university because I found that as soon as I visited Aston it was going to be my first choice. I just loved the feel of the place and Birmingham in general because I find I feel most comfortable in a small community but with a big city on your doorstep so there are plenty of things to do.

Hopefully when you do visit the universities you will find one where you feel at home.

I am doing my phd in marketing related topics in MBS

As far as I know, aston and manchester are the best two for marketing based on your list

lanca is good at finance, esp quan finance

well, nott is a good b school but it tends to be declining in the last couple of yrs...

ABS has a very strong marketing dept. the head of the b school is specialised in marketing

and Aston invented placements, apparently, and they are largely compulsory for students in the business department.

Firms such as Bently, BMW, PwC, Microsoft, Chorus, VW, Hewlett Packard, GSK, 3M, Carlsberg, IBM, Intel, Lloyds TSB, Pfizer, Warner Bros, Xerox etc all have a vested interest in Aston Students. The university also boasts one of the top employment ratios in the UK, based largely upon the success of the placement scheme.

Nice...so you would say Aston has more of an executive appeal than say, a banking/consultancy appeal...?

I was offered a place at Aston Business and Management course, but first year...Could you say average age of people who go there into first year? I`d be 21, I believe mostly there are younger people yes?
Reply 17
Aist, it is fantastic that you got an offer from Aston, which is a very good business school. But you have to consider whether you are up for taking (and paying for) another three years at uni plus a placement year. If you are prepared to do that, then that's great...you can enjoy the benefits of a more prestigious school.

It is a fantastic opportunity, and Aston is a very diverse school, but yes, alot of people would be younger than you. You have to think about whether you are prepared to start from scratch.

I posted this on another thread, cant be bothered writing it all again:
Lancaster is the best!!!!

I'm starting on the N200 course a week tomorrow (wel thats freshers week). I looked at Aston which is really good for management but its Aston so as a Uni the reputation isn't as good as it could be. Employment stats are good for Aston but it wil always be in Birmingham's shadow!

Don't know much about edinburgh but its probably quite good.

Lancaster.... now theres a Uni! It's absolutely amazing. The N200 managament course and most other business related courses have at least the option to do a year in industry which means its a 4 year course. Aston does this as wel, don't know about edinbrugh, Bath does it too and probably others. At lancaster its a huge business school and very new and flash but yet the number of ppl on my course is about 55 which is nice and small. the teachers are passionate from my experience and its a 6* business school out of 5!! Basically means its top of the league for research - its the only undergraduate business school to have that rating. The course is really flexible. The year out will be invaluable for experience and chances of emplyment. Also at Lancaster (unlike most uni's) you look at the list of courses and it's say sciences and arts and management will be an art most likely but at Lancaster the managament school is so big etc its classed as its own faculty along side arts and sciences! Also the N200 course is a BBA which is the only course in the UK or even world like it - stands for bachelor of business administration.

anyway I've ranted on about it for too long - but go for Lancaster! Its a social uni as well cos its all on campus so you bump into people and its split into colleges like cambridge etc so you get a little identity within the mass of 13000 students.

For BBA management N200 you need AAB but if you miss out on it they say they consider you still. Call them up and ask to spreak to Anne Welsby who sorts it all out. I did that and gave my name to her then when she got my application it put me ahead of others

I don't think you get as many electives at Lancaster. They don't use CATS as much as other schools, so you only take like 3 modules in your first year as opposed to 6-10 elsewhere.
