What makes a good personal statement?

hello everyone,

What do you think makes a good personal statement?

Beyond the basics of good use of English etc, I think it's important to speak from the heart about why you *need* to do this degree without being too colloquial about it.

If it's really the degree you want to be doing, I find that the personal statement comes more naturally.

The advice I give students is to answer these three questions:

(1) Why this topic or project interests me.
(2) Why this research group, university or industrial partnership is the best fit for (1).
(3) Why me.

It seems to work.

In addition to what has already been said, you need to link your interest to the course structure and also explain how the course will help you fulfil your ambitions.
