HELP: How do you react with compliments in this situation ??

**People relationship**

let say you are at a gathering at some sort
work
school
uni
whatever

a random person will compliment you
how do you react?
usually it is in agroup

someone will compliment me, then i say thanks but someone else purposely makes it awkward and also compliments the same thing and i have to say thanks again while all eyes are on me.. :s it is so awkward
-sometimes i may make a joke and laugh, but then that second person makes it awkward and i look like center of attention which i hate
-sometimes i may compliment back but that second person makes it awkward and id have to compliment them and it seems fake
- sometimes if it is an object i say where i got it from but that second person i awkward and it probably looks like i am bragging

can someone tell me how to react in these kind of situations

what to do if someone compliments me in a group when all eyes are on you?

Just say thanks but if you have social anxiety, this will take more to overcome than just posts on a thread. Try to be more confident and forget how you think you'll look. Just express your personality

Maybe a little but we all get that I'm sure to some degree or another. I think you're just shy and will learn to be more confident when you increase your self esteem. That's just my unqualified opinion.

Just say thanks and smile. No one will think you're stuck up for accepting a compliment. If anything, if you rejected it, you'd seem a bit weird. As for the centre of attention thing, there's a phenomenon called the 'Spotlight effect' where we think others notice our actions alot more than they really do because we are the centre of our universe of course. People don't notice these small things, you're just being a bit paranoid mate.

This thread = story of my life :sigh:

My best advice is to just smile, say thanks (with eye contact of course) and then look away soon after, or change the subject. That way there's no lingering awkwardness! Complimenting someone back immediately i find often sounds superficial (although this could just be in my head) unless they have something really striking that really demands a compliment in itself. If you feel like you need to develop your confidence however, then you really need to take it in baby steps.

Why bump lol how much more do you want to know? Would you like a detailed analysis of your problem by a psychologist? You're self conscious, find out what makes you self conscious and deal with it. Simple as that, for real. Bit by bit try coming out of your shell and stop being scared of looking silly in front of others. Even in the unlikely case you do something awkward, it'll be funny for like 2-3 seconds and then people get on with their lives again but if you just sit there and don't partake in socialising fully, you'll be seen as a bit weird and an outcast and won't get to enjoy life fully unless you want to be a hermit which, judging by this post you don't want to be.

TL;DR boost your self esteem by finding out why it's missing and deal with it
